Why does fluoride in tap water follow a single standard when everyone drinks differently?
In 1930s D.C., NIH’s Dr. H. Trendley Dean & Dr. Frederick McKay weighed dental fluorosis vs. cavity protection to set the 1 ppm standard.

CLEVELAND, MISSISSIPPI MOVES TOWARD ENDING WATER FLUORIDATION
CLEVELAND, MS — The City of Cleveland is considering ending the practice of adding fluoride to its municipal drinking water, according to a public notice issued in connection with the Mississippi State Department of Health.
The notice says city officials are seeking discontinuation of the community water-fluoridation program and lays out several arguments cited for doing so, including the cost of chemicals and system maintenance, the widespread availability of fluoride through toothpaste and professional dental care, concerns about excessive fluoride exposure causing dental fluorosis, and objections from residents who believe individuals should be able to choose whether they consume added fluoride.
City officials also state in the notice that they believe additional controlled research into fluoride’s effectiveness in preventing tooth decay is warranted.
Supporters of discontinuation have long argued that fluoridated toothpaste and other dental products give individuals the ability to obtain fluoride voluntarily rather than having it added to a community-wide water supply. The Cleveland notice brings that debate directly before local residents.
📷 PUBLIC MEETING
October 5, 2026 — 5:00 PM
100 North Street, Cleveland, Mississippi 38732
Residents will have an opportunity to discuss the proposed discontinuation before the city moves forward.
📷 This is a significant public-policy decision for Cleveland: whether fluoride should continue being added to everyone’s drinking water or whether fluoride use should instead be left to individual choice.

Last year, my law firm Siri & Glimstad filed a series of class action lawsuits against the leading manufacturers of kids’ fluoride products. We filed these cases to bring an end to deceptive marketing practices that lead American children to ingest unsafe levels of fluoride at a vulnerable stage of life.
I am happy to report that Perrigo has decided to stop selling its "Firefly" fluoride mouthwash. Firefly mouthwash was a candy-flavored product that came in a toy-shaped bottle with cartoon characters (e.g., Paw Patrol & Buzz Lightyear) that are popular with preschool children. We alleged this packaging was deceptive because (per FDA and others) fluoride mouthwash is contraindicated for kids under six due to the risk of swallowing the high concentration of fluoride.
We continue actively litigating our other cases, and I hope to be able to announce additional developments in the coming months. @ChildrensHD @ICANdecide @FluorideAction

BREAKING: A new U.S. study of over 2,500 kids across 23 states, led by a multi-center team of scientists, reports that fluoride in public drinking water during pregnancy is linked to lower cognition scores in children —even at levels considered "optimal" for dental health. The U.S. remains the most fluoridated nation on Earth. It's time for that to change. @SecKennedy @DrJBhattacharya

Nordic Countries Decay Rates Plummeted Without Fluoridation
Without water fluoridation or lower sugar intake, Nordic countries’ tooth decay rates declined “remarkably” and was sustained for over 50 years. Fluoride toothpaste was promoted – a collaboration of government officials, organized dentistry, schools, parents and volunteers combined with free oral health care brought The Nordic child populations from having among the highest tooth decay rates in the world to the lowest. (European Journal of Oral Sciences, by Nyvad and Fejerskov (June 12, 2026) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
This “indicates that toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste is a robust population strategy that should be promoted as a valid alternative to community water fluoridation for the control of dental caries,” they write.
The authors suggest that similar results could possibly be achieved without fluoride. Toothbrushing, even without fluoride, may remove cavity-causing biofilm in the mouth and could play a significant role in the cavity decline.
“The Nordic experiences show that once toothbrushing has been taught and trained from early childhood, this habit develops into a social norm that passes down from one generation to the next,” they write.
“Recently, a systematic review and a large epidemiological study indicate that the effects on cavity progression of having fluoride in the drinking water might be smaller than estimated before the widespread use of fluoride toothpaste [and]…is particularly thought provoking in view of the persistent promotion of water fluoridation by dental associations.”
A 1981 study confirmed that a caries decline had taken place in Denmark during the 1970’s and that it was indeed possible to reduce the development of caries at the population level without using systemic fluorides such as water fluoridation.
Dental fluorosis, which has greatly increased in prevalence and severity in the US, “reflects a toxicological effect of the total daily fluoride intake on enamel formation, irrespective of the source,” they write.
“Legal and ethical aspects of fluoride applications have seldom been addressed in relation to public oral health strategies. This is particularly problematic for community water fluoridation, by which large groups of people may be obliged to drink fluoridated water against their will without being informed about potential adverse health effects including the increased risk of dental fluorosis," they write.
"For these reasons, Veneri et al. have referred to community water fluoridation as a form of 'mass medication.' Although such an approach might in some countries have been tolerated in the 1960s and 1970s at a time when dental caries prevalence was extremely high, the caries prevalence in most industrialized countries is now so low that violation of individual rights to medical self-determination, ignoring potential adverse effects of fluorides, can no longer be accepted,” they write.
Japan’s tooth decay rates fell for 40 years without fluoridation or any effective personal fluoride us, according to BMC Public Health.
In the US where fluoride is big business, protected by corporate interests, organized dentistry and chemical companies, untreated tooth decay is at crisis levels, according to Senator Bernie Sanders. Most dentists won’t treat Medicaid patients and the American Dental Association successfully had dental excluded from Medicare
In 2020, the US Surgeon General declared tooth decay a “silent epidemic.” After increases in public water fluoridation, dental visits, sealants, fluoride varnish applications, and significant financial, training, and program investments, oral health hadn't improved in the US in 20 years, according to the American Journal of Public Health.

The EPA claims to want to Make America Healthy Again.
It had an opportunity to do just that on the fluoride issue. In the fall of 2024, a federal district court found (after hearing extensive expert testimony) that adding fluoride to water poses an unreasonable risk of neurological harm in children, and ordered EPA to eliminate this risk.
In the final days of the Biden administration, the EPA announced (as expected) its intention to appeal this landmark decision. This announcement, however, had no binding effect on Lee Zeldin and the new administration.
Zeldin had complete discretion to stand down on the appeal, and to follow the court's order to protect Americans from the health risks posed by fluoridation. Zeldin, however, chose to continue with the appeal.
Despite repeated pleas from the MAHA community, Zeldin and the EPA have persisted with its odious appeal. And now, based on a procedural technicality, a federal appeals court has granted Zeldin's request to vacate the district court's order.
EPA has thus officially undone a historic opportunity to protect the public from a toxic chemical added to most American water supplies (and all beverages and foods made with the water).
There are many ways to describe EPA's conduct here, but Making America Healthy Again is not one of them.

A new study is being touted as showing no relationship between fluoridated water and IQ. But here's what you should know.
The study focuses on a population in Wisconsin that was born in 1940 -- which is five years before any communities in the U.S. began fluoridating their water. This is an important limitation because the key window of vulnerability for fluoride's cognitive effects is the early years of life (in utero and infancy) when the brain is undergoing rapid development and the blood brain barrier does not yet adequately protect the baby from toxic chemicals.
Curiously, the authors *claim* they measured the effect of fluoridation "from birth." This is where it gets interesting.
The authors admit they have no data on water fluoride levels from the 1940s. None. That's a pretty serious limitation by itself. But it gets worse.
To get around this data gap, the authors relied on a 2020 publication that provides test results for about 2 wells per county in Wisconsin. To use this data, the authors needed to make several big assumptions. This is where it gets bad, real bad.
The authors assumed that if ONE well in a county had "optimal" fluoride levels (0.7 mg/L) then EVERY CHILD in that county was exposed to fluoridated water. This assumption, which is critical to the study, has basically no connection to reality. Why? Because the level of fluoride in a single well tells you virtually nothing about the level of fluoride in other wells, let alone in *all* other wells, let alone in *public water supplies* (which are often derived from surface waters, not well water).
Why does this matter? Because the study's use of a clearly erroneous measurement of early life exposure to fluoridated water made it virtually impossible for this study to detect an association between early-life fluoride exposure and IQ. It's like trying to determine if prenatal exposure to Tylenol is associated with autism by determining the Tylenol use of the child's neighbor rather than the child's mother.
Tests of intelligence and brain function were the same whether or not people drank fluoridated water growing up, a highly anticipated, long-term study finds. nbcnews.com/health/kids-heal…

Yesterday, the EPA issued a press release on its new "review" of fluoride. EPA wants the MAHA movement to be focused on this press release.
But simultaneous to issuing this press release yesterday, EPA also filed a legal brief to further challenge a federal court order requiring EPA to take action to protect the public from fluoridation's "unreasonable risk" to health.
The time has come for action to reduce the public's exposure to fluoride; not just another government review. That is what the court ordered EPA to do, and what the MAHA movement should insist upon - especially since EPA's review will likely take 2 or more years to complete. @SecKennedy @FluorideAction @FluorideLawsuit
