Rest in peace, African Lion
Hon Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga was a great leader, loved and hated in the same breadth. He shaped Kenyan political landscape, disrupting the status quo and reinvesting himself every time he lost. His malleability made him an enigma.

I interacted with him once. May His Soul Rest in Peace. To Ida Odinga, her spirit kept Raila going on. She never let the state biases and brutality disorient her. I met Ida in 2013 in Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington DC.

This is a systems indictment — calling out the crisis of aid, the erosion of civic imagination, and the urgent need for reparative, justice-rooted philanthropy.

Meet Gilbert Gitonga, a visionary dairy farmer from Timau whose journey is a testament to the life-changing power of financial #inclusion. With the support of Solution Sacco, Gilbert has significantly expanded his dairy enterprise over the past six years. What started with a humble request for credit to procure a pickup to transport milk has now blossomed into a thriving business, where Gilbert works with over 600 farmers, collectively aggregating 7,000 liters of milk daily for a local cheese factory.
Gilbert's success story doesn't end there. Recognizing the growing challenges posed by climate change, he has proactively supported his fellow farmers by facilitating access to silage, ensuring that sustainable practices are adopted within his community for long-term success.
During a recent field visit, MESPT’s Board Chair, Noah Meely, Vice Chair, Irene Gathinji, and CEO Rebecca Amukhoye had the privilege of meeting Gilbert, witnessing firsthand how strategic partnerships can unlock tremendous transformation of smallholder farm families livelihoods. This interaction also allowed them to engage with the board and management of Solution SACCO, providing invaluable insights into MESPT’s financial models and reinforcing the importance of supporting smallholder farmers.
Gilbert's story is just a glimpse of the extraordinary work happening through our partnerships with financial service providers. We aim to continue expanding access to critical financial products, ensuring more farmers like Gilbert can enhance their livelihoods, strengthen their communities, and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Together, we can sow the seeds for a brighter, more sustainable future for smallholder farmers across the region.
