Aston Villa keep scoring goals season after season through simple but effective solutions. When a centre-back drives inside, the midfielders move diagonally. This positioning forces the opposition midfielders to choose: protect the space or stay closer to their man. If they stay central to protect space, Villa's midfielders are free to receive. If they become man-oriented, straight passing lanes open up towards the front line. In Serie A, teams have long tried to manipulate man-to-man systems by moving midfielders into wide areas to open direct passing lanes towards the front players. However, this comes with a risk: losing the ball can leave midfielders out of position and expose the team in transition. Aston Villa approach this differently. They understand that vertical progression from the defensive line towards the front line during the deep build-up carries an inherent risk of losing possession. That's why, in their 4-2-2-2, the midfielders remain central, providing protection in case the ball is lost. Pau Torres feints to play around his direct opponent before driving inside. The midfielders move diagonally to open up space. McGinn receives between the lines and uses his body to protect the ball, while two other attackers begin intelligent runs in behind, timing them to exploit the defenders' blind sides. I don't know how many times I have seen this in Villa's games. Same game model season after season, but with individual details refined every year. Opponents know what's coming, but Villa keep doing it, and it keeps working.

I HATED Steven Gerrard the Player. HATED him. But the great thing about shows like @WeAreTheOverlap is that you get to see the human side and he’s a decent fella. Absolutely spot on about Bruno Fernandes.

“The world looks towards English football with incredible respect but they still think, the movie stars of football, they belong to other places. We have to build your profile, in that direction.” Job done.
I had always assumed that Harry Kane wouldn’t get near the Ballon d’Or because he lacked the PR to beat the superstars that he was up against. His numbers, longevity and overall game are so deserving of it. Top man. 🫡

Harry Kane going from football’s most famous trophyless player to a Ballon d’Or winner might be the greatest example of why changing employers can improve your life.

🚨🎙️ - Gary Neville CALLS OUT the Manchester United board after the loss: “It's 14 years now without a Premier League title. That will be another 5 or 10 before you know it because there are other clubs set up for success and Manchester United are NOT. “They are making poor decisions. From a business perspective, this is really damaging. It CANNOT just be the manager again. “There has got to be consequences ABOVE that. You can't keep letting the people pick the manager who keep getting it WRONG.”

This guy called Zion Suzuki is not a goalkeeper bro,he must have started as a midfielder, this guy is insane with his ball distribution, This was one of his best highlights you will ever see, look calm he is on the ball and how almost all his long passes are accurate and beautiful to watch and his shot saving is not bad either, what a goalkeeper he is developing into 🔥🔥
I can't believe the best part of the Man City vs Aston Villa game is watching Suzuki on the ball. 😭🔥 This guy's distribution is INSANE! The accuracy, the range, the confidence… he's picking out passes that most goalkeepers wouldn't even attempt. Even the commentator couldn't hide his reaction, shouting, "Oh my God, wow!" 😂👏

Look at how compact Villa are with the 4-4-2 OOP atm is such a good formation OOP. Why Carrick abandoned it for the 4-2-4 I will never know.
Quite clear how obsessed Carrick is with denying the centre of the pitch. The 4-4-2 yesterday was SO narrow, the City wingers had metres of space to work with, but when they received the ball high up, the FB would rotate out, and the winger would drop in to cover. It felt so coordinated in just 3 days, it was crystal clear in all phases when to jump, when to retreat, when to slide the back 4 across to cover the winger. Lowest xG, lowest shots on target & second-lowest shots in a Prem game for City.

When United sold Scott McTominay (€30m + £60k/week), he had served as one of Ten Hag’s trusted lieutenants, brought on to chase games, keep a lead, and to score goals. Replacing him with Ugarte (€60m + £120k/week) was, at that time, and will remain one of the most extraordinary failures of squad planning and transfer valuations in Manchester United's recent history. Scott scored 10 club-goals the prior season and has scored 29 club-goals since. Ugarte has scored 2 club-goals in that time. Scott has twice the number of starts, and almost twice as many club-minutes. You might argue that these comparisons are not sound because the played feature for different teams, but that is exactly the point. United paid (€30m diff. in transfer fee + £60k/week more) to trade a goal-scoring midfielder that played almost every match for one who couldn’t get a sniff on the pitch. (The post in the last image was written before he went on to be Serie A’s player of the season after leaving the club.)
🚨 Erik ten Hag reveals to @TheAthleticFC: “In Ibiza, we agreed. I said: NO selling Scott McTominay”. “Scott has United in all his veins: I said clearly: no exit”. “And in the end… they sold him. I was very embarassed and disappointed”.
