A major legal immigration story is unfolding inside @USCIS: the agency is on pace to adjudicate fewer applications in FY2026 than in any year in more than a decade—even as its pending caseload has reached a record 12.1 million. New from @ThirdWay: thirdway.org/memo/front-door…

Haven't posted in a while. Just wrote this comparative piece for @ThirdWayTweet, "Order is the Price of Admission." Analyzes how four western democracies managed large-scale immigration while keeping the far right at bay, and how three others did not. thirdway.org/memo/order-is-t…

Biden's HHS has recommended disallowing EcoHealth —the collaborator of Wuhan Institute of Virology— from receiving any federal funding. Let's note the bipartisan discomfort about being misled for years that was on full display during the hearing. Statement from the Democrats:
Breaking: @HHSGov has recommended that @EcoHealthNYC - the U.S. science nonprofit that helped fund risky coronavirus research at Wuhan Institute of Virology - be debarred from further federal research funding. Why does this matter? A look back at some key moments.🧵👇/1

This exchange is so on point. Biden's been admitting refugees from leftwing countries (Vzla, Cuba, Nica) to join communities that vote Republican. Most are workers they claim, too. Yet Rs accuse Biden of bolstering the ranks of the Democratic Party. What bullshit.
A strange thing about MAGA populists: They keep saying their "pro-worker" agenda appeals to nonwhite working class people. But then they say migration is a dastardly plot to create Dem voters. By your own lights, wouldn't these people vote GOP? Check out our exchange on this:

Don't overlook this: It's no accident that Trump and MAGA are tanking the border deal at the same time that they're telegraphing plans for a second term organized around full blown ethnonationalist savagery. A border deal threatens that project. 1/ Link: newrepublic.com/article/1785…

Spot on analysis by the well-sourced @GregTSargent. GOP screams about a "border crisis" and then refuses the toughest bill imaginable because Trump and MAGA want the issue. Just wow.
More news on the GOP killing the border deal: This comes as negotiators are discussing a whole new process for expelling asylum seekers and spending way more than the $14 billion Biden wanted, sources say. This sn't good enough for MAGA. Insane. Link: newrepublic.com/article/1784…

☀️ MCCONNELL BOWS TO TRUMP ON BORDER Last night, we scooped that MCCONNELL told Republican senators that time had essentially run out on trying to craft a Ukraine-border package. "We dont want to do anything to undermine [Trump]," said McConnell, who can barely utter the former president's name. "The politics on this have changed," McConnell said. TIM SCOTT then was asked about our reporting on Fox and said the border bill is DOA. The bill was being crafted by his 2010 classmate Lankford.

Dear Biden admin, listen to this excellent proposal — and similar ideas. Unite your coalition and split theirs. Take action that solves problems. Own the debate, don’t let it own you.
Another reason this is good politics: It could split the GOP coalition, something @danpfeiffer regularly talks about as a guiding strategic imperative. Pit pragmatic GOP governors who recognize the value of migrants against DeSantis and MAGA Rs who use them as stunt vehicles.

Important. Best way to manage the immigration debate is to lean in with proactive solutions. The Hub and friends provide the roadmap.

Heartbreaking. It's up to Congress to formally recognize Dreamers and others as the Americans they already are, and once again Congress failed. A witches brew of @LeaderMcConnell cynicism, the @Cornyn Con and GOP determination to exploit the issue rather than solve the problem.
Just infuriating: The deal to protect 2 million dreamers and overhaul our asylum system is dead. McConnell told Sinema and Tillis he wouldn't attach it to the omnibus, and other sticking points arose, sources tell me. Here's the ugly, awful inside story: washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

“Senator Romney, you and other like-minded GOP colleagues have a big opening right now to demonstrate your seriousness of purpose — by supporting an emerging compromise on immigration reform that would address numerous significant problems all at once.” washingtonpost.com/opinions/…
Coming out of Twitter retirement to salute @ThePlumLineGS for his reporting/analysis on immigration, an issue that generates more heat than light. My take: given the sorry state of the status quo, a decent deal is better than no deal. Let's see if Rs get there and the deets work.
Big news: Sen. Thom Tillis and Kyrsten Sinema have reached a deal on a framework of immigration reforms: *Protections for 2 million Dreamers *New resources to speed processing asylum seekers *Fast removal of migrants who don't qualify More details here: washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

From Gallup writeup: "With the majority of Americans, 58%, still wanting the number of people coming to the U.S. from other countries either increased or kept as is, the majority also continue to believe that, on the whole, immigration is a good thing for the country."
More Americans want fewer immigrants in US for first time since 2014, poll reveals trib.al/lbld0oa

Excellent: Democrats stuck together to defeat all the GOP poison pill amendments on immigration. This is essential to getting the climate bill through to passage. Well done apnews.com/article/inflation…

She doesn't name names, but it's pretty clear she just called groups like Catholic Charities and sheroes like Sr. Norma "enemies within."
Texas’ 34th Congressional Rep., Mayra Flores, said at CPAC 2022 that organizations that lend aid to migrants on their way to the US represent “enemies within.”

In order to maintain the integrity of the historic agreement to advance the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, all @SenateDems must stay united and vote NO on ALL amendments, regardless of the underlying policy and of which party offers them.
