Anyone remember this protest to protect mature trees and native #redsquirrel within a nature corridor in Cockermouth from a development of luxury flats? #lakedistrict #nature #trees 🐿️🌳 There’s some positive news! 🙏🤞 The developer has publicly made out not even 100 folk attended the protest and just dismissed it! 🙄 My humble phone video shows otherwise!!
It appears there’s a delay from @CumberlandCoun from scheduling with such approved planning matters. It seems they wish to see an up to date “ecological report”.
The nature report the developer Mr Dobie used in his planning submission was years out of date. A copy and paste job most decent folk (including scientists, conservationists etc) knew but for some reason was accepted by the council 🙄
That said, I’d like to know why many Tree Preservation Orders on the site were mysteriously removed in recent months with no obvious PUBLIC CONSULTATION 🤔🌳
The site is a VALUABLE nature corridor for many rare species including our ‘legally protected’ red squirrels! 🐿️
So, it’s good news that offers hope from a development of luxury flats that would’ve contributed nowt to the community of Cockermouth (they’ll end up being second homes or holiday lets) or nature and much else that the town council and many locals opposed.
My personal hope is the local authority revisits the proposal, listens and takes on board local voices and considers the bigger picture 🤞🐿️🌳
I’d like to think the developer Mr Dobie who proclaims to care about local communities has a good long hard think and perhaps change his mind or at the very least…amend his plans to genuinely consider the local community and nature 🤞🤞🐿️🌳
Not everything in life is about money 😢 Maybe those who have lots of it and appear to care should consider wider society and the issues many face let alone nature?🤔

My @NCL_Geography colleague Alastair Bonnett has written about three major global changes facing geography (and the world) - including perhaps the necessity to leave behind our demarcation of physical/human geography due to climate change:
