Check out our new pre-print! To gain a better theoretical understanding of microbial symbiosis, we explore how pathogenic and mutualistic bacteria under a competition-colonization framework can coexist under a dynamic host population 🧫🪸

We ask, when pairwise species interactions exclude many species, can higher-order interactions rescue coexistence?

New preprint! W/ Jonathan Levine and @Exp_EvoEco. Using a combination of theory and experiment, we ask how competitor-induced phenotypic plasticity changes the interactions between annual plants.

Incredibly honored to be recognized by @ESA_Theory... thank you to my collaborators/advisers and all the members of our labs for their detailed feedback which made this paper so much better!
Congrats also to @JasperCroll and @andrederoos61 for their excellent paper!!!
Replying to @ESA_Theory

Introducing specific correlations between the pairwise and higher-order interactions can essentially guarantee stability, however, suggesting that mechanisms which generate these interaction patterns may unambiguously benefit coexistence.

📝#TBauthorssummary A new Author's Summary of the paper
"Coexistence in diverse communities with higher-order interactions" - Theo Gibbs @GibbsTheo, Simon A. Levin, Jonathan M. Levine - PNAS 2022
doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2205063…
Most ecological models assume that interactions operate between pairs of species, but what if two species interactively affect the growth of a third species?
Out now @PNASNews, our work predicts how these higher-order interactions impact coexistence. 1/7
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…
All in all, it seems unlikely that higher-order interactions will produce widespread coexistence, unless they have a specific structure tuned to the strengths of the pairwise interactions. 6/7
Many thanks to my co-authors and co-advisers Simon Levin and Jonathan Levine for supervising this project, as well as all the support I received from the @Princeton @PrincetonGrad EEB and QCB communities. Also thanks to two anonymous reviewers for very helpful suggestions! 7/7
