Best anecdote in Carol Thatcher's book about her father is when Sir Denis boarded a train at Paddington in which the only empty compartment was reserved for Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital.
Denis travelled alone and in comfort as far as Reading when "all these chaps piled in", accompanied by a male nurse, who counted them before the train moved off.
'One, two, three, four ... who are you?"
"I'm the Prime Minister's husband."
"Six, seven, eight, nine..."

Britain needs ‘chainsaw economics’.
My latest column for @FT. Shock therapy can liberate the UK economy from a cycle of low growth, rising debt and an expanding state:

Cost of a council house is upwards of £200k now. So these numbers are out by a factor of two. (Also, switching funding from affordable housing to council housing results in less housing...)
EXC: The Chancellor John Healey is set to announce a £1billion boost to council housing which can deliver up to 10,000 homes in the Budget. The government also plans to help more councils borrow for housebuilding by extending preferential rates.

Arguing that the private sector is what drives growth isn't a matter of ideology. It's a matter of maths. As beautifully illustrated by this story in the Mirror today. (1/?)

🚨 NEW: The Government’s entrepreneurship adviser has quit ahead of the Budget
“We treat [innovation and entrepreneurship] as a bit of a sideshow... that mentality is really dangerous for British business as a whole”

CPS paper, literally this morning: the govt is relying on the PuFins to borrow way more while keeping it off the books, thanks to the way they changed the fiscal rules

Alias or no, you emailed our official address, received a truthful reply, and nevertheless published false representations about our organisation. We could have signed it “The CCR Team” and it would’ve made no difference to you.
We will be escalating this to your regulator.

We’ve repeatedly stated in both private and public communications that we get no funding. Everyone who has written for us has done so on a voluntary basis, free of charge, using publicly available data and FOIs. We replied to your reporter’s email in good faith and told the truth.
Meanwhile you have refused to actually engage with any of the arguments we’ve put forward in any of our papers. You’ve preferred to attack us on the basis that our authors and staff (insofar as they can be called that) are volunteers who give up their free time to help a cause they deem worthy. You have no arguments other than that you don’t like what we say or the manner in which we publish. You even take umbrage at those who have kindly put their real names to their work!
The only objective here is to obtain the legal names of our contributors so you can publish them in full and initiate a campaign of harassment against them. It is our duty to protect them from this. They are all normal people who wish to keep their policy work separate from their daily lives.
You have been incapable of judging our work on its own merits, so have resorted to printing things that are false. How are we supposed to “prove” we have no money? We have no bank account, no registered organisation, and no permanent staff. You would not believe us even if we did tell you everything about us. You’ve not engaged in good faith. Why should anyone listen to you or believe you?
Finally, we ask
Who funds you?
We did not lie. As far as we know since only fake names have contacted us, both the management, ownership and financing of this think tank remain mysterious. Even though you celebrated their results being published in the @Telegraph - we assume they know who you are

My latest against actual rent control by the backdoor in The Spectator. I've written against no other piece of legislation more. Private property must stand against the planners.
Recently a landlord, Mr Cao, attempted to increase the rent on his central Manchester flat by £50 a month from £1,650 to £1,700.
The tenant, Ms Nau, brought the increase to a tribunal under the Renters’ Rights Act, which only allows rent increases once a year and only in line with the open market rent. Ultimately, the tribunal decided to cut the rent by £200, as they believed it had already exceeded the open market rent.
This is rent control by the backdoor; shortages and reduced quality of housing will inevitably follow.

I love late stage Sovietism. Market prices are illegal (Tribunals decide rents) and now private property is also outlawed (HMRC can make arbitrary confiscations without due process).
🚨 NEW: The Tories say Labour's plan to let HMRC take unpaid tax directly from bank accounts is "outrageous"
"Labour want the taxman to be able to empty your bank account over a few hundred pounds and leave you with nothing to pay the rent. It is absurd that Labour are handing the taxman powers like these. Scrapping these safeguards and collaborating with credit agencies so they can decide which accounts to raid is outrageous... they are once again approaching the Budget looking for yet more ways to squeeze the public so they can bankroll more benefits handouts"
Lord Frost warns Reform UK against promising voters an easy way out of Britain's economic problems.
@DavidGHFrost argues that cutting benefits for migrants won't be enough – and that politicians need to be honest with voters about the scale of the challenge.
