I think one of the saddest things about modern childhood is the loss of cartoons as inheritance. I grew up watching Scooby-Doo reruns decades after it first aired. Kids today have more content than ever, but perhaps less shared cultural inheritance across generations.

This is literally going to be absolute cinema
DeSean Jackson's older brother made the Chiefs practice squad—then quit football, picked up a camera, and spent the next 35 years filming his little brother.
Pop Warner. Long Beach Poly. Cal. The Eagles.
Thousands of hours of home video nobody outside that family has ever seen.
Their dad told DeSean to "think NFL." He finished with 26 career TDs of 60+ yards—still the NFL record, and nobody's close.

Grateful to God for 77 years! My birthday wish is simple: help someone feel encouraged today. Together, we can make my birthday a celebration that reaches far beyond me.

Taylor Heinicke went undrafted in 2015 out of Old Dominion, despite setting a Division I record for total yards in a game.
Over the next five years he bounced through the Vikings, the Patriots practice squad, the Texans, and the Panthers. Cut. Waived. Cut again. He appeared in a total of seven games across three seasons.
By the summer of 2020 he was done.
He moved in with his sister. He started taking classes to finish the college degree he never completed. He looked into coaching jobs. His agent told him to get the degree first, so he did.
He kept training anyway, mostly because his brother-in-law kept pushing him to. Not because he thought a team would call. Just in case.
In December 2020, his agent called. Washington needed a body on the practice squad in case COVID wiped out the quarterback room.
He was an insurance policy. Nothing more.
Weeks later, the starter went down. Heinicke got the ball.
He made his first career playoff start against Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. Washington lost, but Heinicke threw for 306 yards and ran for a touchdown against arguably the greatest quarterback ever to play, and the league noticed.
That performance turned into three seasons as Washington's starter, then stops in Atlanta and with the Chargers. He finished his career with 6,663 passing yards and 39 touchdowns across 42 NFL games, all as a player nobody drafted.
This past weekend he went back to Old Dominion just to watch a game as an alum.
The school surprised him at halftime with the news. On October 15, Old Dominion will retire his number 14, the first jersey retirement in program history.
Five years ago he was studying for a degree he thought would replace football. Now the number he wore chasing it is about to hang in the rafters for good.
During Saturday night's Old Dominion Football game, the Monarchs announced they'll retire Taylor Heinicke's #14 jersey October 15th at halftime of the Georgia Southern game.

Dude worked hard his whole career, fulfilled his dream playing in the NFL, silenced the stupid, and left it all out there. TH4 is getting his college jersey retired. He rides off into the sunset with his beautiful wife. I’ll take that life. #RaiseHail teapaw.org/jckattato/status/20967…

Clinton Portis reveals that before he committed to Miami he asked Edgerrin James if he was leaving for the NFL, and says that’s when Edge taught him to seek competition instead of opportunity
“When I committed to the U, it was from a piece of advice that Edge gave me. We were standing on the field, and I said, ‘You leaving? Are you leaving if I come?’ He said, ‘Man, it shouldn’t matter whether I leave or if I stay.’”
“‘You should want the competition. You don’t want anything given to you.’ And that advice has taken me so far because of the running back rooms I’ve been in. You talk about Willis, Frankie G, Najeh Davenport, James Jackson, and then when I got to Denver, you’ve got Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary.”
“I never sat in a room like, ‘Oh shit, this dude is going to beat me out.’ Homeboy, you go out there and practice and show them what you’re capable of. On Sunday, when I go out there and bust his lunch pail, that’s going to change all of that.”
“I remember my first practice in Denver. Terrell was there, and they said, ‘First team, ones come up.’ We had 12 people in the huddle and everybody, Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, they’re laughing, ‘Bro, get out of here. Get out of this huddle.’”
“I said, ‘Man, they said ones. They said ones come up.’ There ain’t no two or no three. I’m a one. That was the confidence. There was no beef with Terrell. The competition is what made me thrive.”
