i noticed a shift in public perception of generation 2 when challenge videos on youtube started becoming the norm over reviews. those videos use these games as a vehicle for content, so anything that becomes an inconvenience to their optimized play style is seen as a design flaw

So much "bad design" discourse for pokemon games comes down to the fact that a lot of ppl are way too casual. They over prepare and build bad teams. Every game in the series can pretty easily be conquered with just starter + other good early game mon, to the point where 1/2
