Interesting that @X put a “warning” on this post. I’m betting the warning about “sensitive content” isn’t referencing the cheese…

In my new story for @statnews I dove into the medical reasoning for BMI-limits in top surgery, how they effect trans folks who are told to lose massive amounts of weight, and why many surgeons are getting rid of them.

Thanks to @therisenjester and @ChalaTheCowboy for being willing to share their harrowing stories of denial and to my editor @eemershon for such careful and thoughtful guidance through such a complex issue
And thanks to the surgeons and researchers who took the time to talk to me @FRubinoMD , @drlschechter, @dralexeshazen, @DrHeavenstone, @JoshuaSafer, Dr. Fan Liang, Dr. Ellie Zara Ley and Dr. Gabriel Del Corral. I met so many in medicine who care so deeply.

What feels like ages ago and
yesterday, @HC_onley approached me for an interview on my experience as a fat transmasc person who was able to get top surgery.
This article they wrote is thought provoking, heartbreaking, and a sorely needed light shining on a very real problem.

Gender-affirming surgery can be life-changing for trans & genderqueer folk. Getting turned away from that care based on body size can be devastating.
Chala June shares their story with @HC_onley of how they got top surgery after being denied due to their BMI.

I spent months researching the history of the BMI and medical anti-fat bias for this story about barriers to top surgery. Huge props to @MaintenancePod and @yrfatfriend’s book What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat for all your work on this issue
Last October, @embodiedWUNC host Anita Rao got an email that piqued her curiosity: a pitch about how anti-fat bias affects people seeking gender-affirming surgery. She hands the mic over to audio journalist H Conley (@HC_onley).

Extra extra! @newmarkjschool recent health/sci grad @HC_onley just published their capstone, a deeply reported audio piece about barriers to top surgery for trans folks, and it's a great listen. @kallipearl wunc.org/podcast/embodied-po…
Listen to the story of Chala’s road to surgery and the effect of BMI cut-offs on trans people (plus see the photos) on the @embodiedWUNC show page —> wunc.org/podcast/embodied-po…
" I will be intolerably trans and anyone who can't make space for that just can't make space for me."
Today audio journalist @HC_onley does a deep dive into how anti-fat bias affects people seeking gender-affirming surgery: kite.link/rPG54og

ALT An illustration of a Black person without a shirt looking at themselves in a bathroom mirror. They have short hair and scars underneath their breasts from a top surgery. They are wearing a purple towel around their waist and there are stretch marks on their stomach. The word "Refused" is in the upper righthand corner of the illustration, above a towel bar.
My capstone project for @newmarkjschool will be published TOMORROW on the Embodied Podcast! I'm so incredibly proud of this story and grateful to my advisor/editor extraordinaire @elaberwarren who read an unreasonable number of drafts and pushed me to overcome my discomfort <3
Tune in tomorrow for a very special conversation between Chala June and @HC_onley about medical anti-fat bias when it comes to receiving gender-affirming healthcare 💙
