One of the best parts of being invited to teach at Harvard's @HMSPostgradCE Herbert Benson MD Course for Mind Body Medicine (via the @BensonHenry Institute), was also being invited to attend the whole course!
The first day I was on site from 7:30 am (4:30 am my time) to 6:30 pm, excitedly making notes in my notebook for most of that time. By the end, I wasn't even tired, and could still have happily learned more!
I didn't even drink coffee (it makes me shake), so this was fueled by pure passion and joy.
Learning is so good for us, especially when we learn about something we love or are deeply interested in.
Some brain benefits of learning:
- It increases our "cognitive reserve", which reduces the risk of dementia (we'll have deposited more in our "brain account", and be less impacted if we lose some of it)
- When we learn new things, it literally changes our brain by increasing our "neuroplasticity". We strengthen new connections between neurons. Learning can also stimulate our brain to make brand new neurons!
A huge extra benefit was that I was surrounded by a community of like-minded clinicians from all over the world.
I've often felt isolated in medicine because of the unique (aka different/weird) path that I ended up forging for myself, but here I was surrounded by "my species".
Add in some brisk walks, yummy healthy meals, and the beauty of Boston, and you have a very happy me, and a very happy body and brain! (and a lot of new friends)
