The BBC has agreed to pay ÂŁ400,000 to an award-winning Jewish documentary-maker who alleged she was subjected to antisemitism and pushed out of the corporation after October 7.
Lucie Kon, 57, spent 22 years at the BBC and worked on programmes including Panorama, Today, BBC Breakfast and Storyville. Films she commissioned or helped produce won an Oscar, Emmy and Bafta.
Kon says her treatment changed dramatically after the Hamas attacks. She alleges colleagues described Zionists like her as âevilâ, argued that Israel should be called terrorist if Hamas was, and told her to consider what had driven Hamas to carry out the massacre.
When she proposed a documentary about October 7, Kon says she was told she was âtoo partialâ to oversee it because she was Jewish.
She subsequently filed a formal grievance, but a BBC investigation rejected her complaint. Kon says she was then kept away from work for months. During a restructuring, her position was made redundant and she failed to secure the similar role replacing it.
She launched unfair-dismissal proceedings.
The BBC has now agreed substantial compensation, reported as ÂŁ400,000, without admitting liability or accepting that Kon suffered antisemitism.
Kon says Jewish employees still at the corporation continue to face hostility and feel unable to identify openly as Jewish or Zionist.

Burnham and Healey are gambling that they will get another chance to do a big budget. But they may look back on this as the best opportunity they had.
There are, to my mind, three possible explanations for their approach.
One is that they would rather not level with their MPs and the country now. The argument goes that they will be in a better place to confront the trade-offs next autumn. But political capital is a depreciating asset.
The second is that they are doing a Mr Micawber, hoping something will turn up to improve the public finances. That could be faster-than-expected growth or a big reduction in government borrowing costs. Either is always possible, but look around the world and you will see the opposite is expected.
The other possibility is that they are planning an early election. That would push the reckoning beyond polling day, giving them more flexibility. As I know all too well, elections are never risk-free.
The problem is that Wednesdayâs budget, and the IMFâs praise for Britain, are founded on fantasy - the idea that the Labour Party will accept the tight spending limits that are meant to kick in as the next election approaches.
My preference would be for a budget that cut spending, reduced business taxes and enacted growth-enhancing supply-side reform. Yet with his party in no mood for cuts, you can see why Healey is likely to avoid doing anything too bold on Wednesday.
They will never have more room for manoeuvre than now. I know, having done both jobs, that you regret the decisions you donât take far more than the ones you do.
More on the budget in my @thetimes column today đ

This is one of the most illiberal, invasive and appalling pieces of legislation ever to come before Parliament.
The Conversion Practices Bill isnât about preventing gay children from being abusively coerced into being straight. That is already rightly illegal.
It will criminalise well-intentioned conversations between parents and gender-confused children, discussions with therapists, and religious leaders sharing their faithâs teachings with their congregations.
A parent could face up to five years in prison simply for trying to dissuade their child from embarking on irreversible, dangerous and life-changing medical pathways before the age of 18.
In his letter to the pre-legislative scrutiny committee, the Minister for Equalities attempts to reassure us that the bill respects âfreedom of religion and parental rightsâ.
It does no such thing.
So much for the Labour Governmentâs promise to tread more lightly on our lives. It is not the stateâs role to dictate what conversations parents can have with their young children around the dinner table.
Parents know best â not ministers.

I told you. All from the insane SNP playbook
UK Treasury confirms extra ÂŁ20bn over five years for the so-called National Wealth Fund (ÂŁ15bn) and the state-owned British Business Bank (ÂŁ5bn), which lends to business.
Treasury claims this will support around 100,000 jobs by 2035 in AI, defence and green energy â a figure it has pretty much plucked out of thin air and will never really be tested because by 2035 everyone will have forgotten such a modest announcement.
Two takeaways:
Yet more government borrowing. Itâs an addiction.
Illustrates government philosophy: growth will come from a bigger, more activist state. Ho hum.

This is a massive slap in the face for the Chancellor and Burnham.
The wheels are completely coming off Labourâs economic plan before the Budget has even been delivered đ€
When your top business voice walks out on you, itâs a vote of no confidence.
And the Treasuryâs own entrepreneurship adviser, Alex Depledge MBE, didnât go quietly either.
She delivered a blistering critique, warning that Labour treats innovation as nothing more than a âsideshow.â
Instead of backing the wealth creators who actually drive growth, she claims the Treasury is obsessed with propping up dying industries.
Itâs clear that Healey is preparing a raid on business incentives, likely gutting crucial reliefs like Business Asset Disposal Relief.
We all know you canât tax a country into growth, no matter how hard this Treasury tries to prove otherwise.
This is Burnham dragging us straight back to the 1970s.
Utterly clueless.

How will the mayor deal with this looming crisis ?
Labour are in a right mess.
If they cut public spending, they risk losing voters.
If they increase spending, they risk triggering a financial crisis.

Update: @itvnews has seen a copy of the 2018 letter which was passed to Meghan by the Metropolitan Police, outlining allegations about her father, Thomas Markle.
It was this letter - written by someone close to the Markle family - which caused Meghan to cease all contact with her father. As she wrote today, it was to "protect" her children, Archie and Lilibet.
