Canada has been making cars for over 100 years. In fact, in the 1920s it was the second largest automobile producer in the world. The 1965 Auto Pact turned North America into a car powerhouse. It was a win-win. By combining the car economies of the US and Canada, it strengthened the position of North America overall. The deal was that Canada would make cars in proportion to its Canadian sales. In 2000, Canada built 3 million cars. Last year it made 1.3M. America’s competition in cars is not coming from Canada. It’s coming from Mexico. In the 2008 financial collapse, the Canadian government disproportionately contributed to the bailout of the Big 3. In 2024, to help the United States, Canada erected a 100% tariff on Chinese cars and a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum. It paid dearly for doing so. China responded by placing a 100% tariff on Canadian canola oil and meal and 25% on Canadian pork and seafood. Nevertheless, despite Canada’s loyalty to the US, Trump put a 25% tariff on Canadian autos and vowed to destroy the Canadian auto industry. Canada, in a move to help diversify trade, has since responded by reduce some of its restrictions on China and reduce its dependence on America. Canada is the largest market for American cars outside of the United States. Trump is bound and determined to piss off Canadians so much that that won’t buy any more American cars. What an idiot.
