Today, the Transportation Department said the fuel economy standards set under Biden went beyond legal limits because they counted electric vehicles in the average gas mileage. Yes, cars that use no gas were helping raise the gas mileage average. These rules come from the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program, which tells carmakers how many miles per gallon their vehicles need to get. Biden’s team included electric vehicles because they use zero gas, which pushed up the average and made things look greener than they really were. The problem is the law behind these rules only covers fuel-burning vehicles. The Transportation Department, now under Trump, said that including EVs stretched the rules past their breaking point. They issued a new regulation called Resetting the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Program, which removes EVs from the calculation entirely. Without EVs inflating the numbers, fuel economy targets for gas-powered vehicles will now be lower. That means less pressure on car companies and a step back from Biden’s clean energy push.
