I missed most of Barbara Barrie on Barney Miller because I was of an age when I was out of the house more than watching TV, but even before Breaking Away or a memorable one episode shot on Mary Tyler Moore, I'd seen One Potato, Two Potato (1964). Brave film, brave performer.

There's a lot of gay ppl doing culture commentary now who do not know cultural references beyond the ones that have been memes on the internet. In previous generations being gay in that space was all about being a nerd about cultural minutiae of the past. That was the foundation

From overlooked office workers to fading movie stars, ageing in Billy Wilder’s films is about more than growing old. Across his career, he wittily chronicled characters confronting missed opportunities, diminished relevance and the feeling that life has passed them by. theb.fi/4idhur1

I don't think not having heard of Cassavetes is a crime but I don't get why you wouldn't just watch some of his films instead of getting into a multi day twitter argument to make a completely inscrutable point.
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

Every year on this platform, Gena Rowland’s life, work and marriage to the renowned director who cast her in most his films is celebrated. Don’t give me this BS that Cassavetes' work has been hidden.

That's fair. And I totally get that some well-known filmmakers don't get discussed much among certain groups. (I got a film studies degree without anyone ever saying the words "Ingmar Bergman" to me.) My issue is with the weirdly confrontational attitude that nowadays often accompanies declarations of ignorance. It's this very strange (and imo ruinous) modern tendency to assume that if one hasn't heard of something/someone, then it must somehow be suspect/not good. I get it every year when I share my Top 10/20 list. A bunch of people saying "Never heard of these!" as if that's the end of the discussion. Lists/recommendations should help us discover things, not confirm our biases or congratulate us for our taste.

I agree Calvin. Lea’s actually smiling here and she never did that in either of her Bond films. Sadly, because of that, Swanny is up there as one of my least favourite Bond girls
