the pillaging and plundering of Detroit remains some of the most heartbreaking history of American cities.
sometimes I see a beautifully detailed small house like this and remember at one time Detroit had the highest paid workers in the world

Salon does an article about Sámi food just a few weeks before the launch of our documentary (filmed by @HvVideoStore) about the Sámi. The quote about them and their language being culturally repressed is the main topic. Also, we ate reindeer meat. salon.com/2022/08/28/the-cul…

Just saw the latest cut of Endangered Voices, our documentary for @osvinfinitefilm. Insanely excited, and feel truly honored to be able to do projects like this as part of the @osventuresllc fellowship. But, I thought this would be a great time to reflect on how I can improve. We're ramping up an entire docu-series on endangered languages around the world, and I want it to f*cking rock. So, here are the top 5 things I've learned about shooting documentaries to up our game next time: 5) Shoot absolutely everything, all the time. Bourdain said he would shoot one hour of footage for every minute of episode. That meant 40 - 45 hours of filming. To achieve this, you need to shoot a LOT. And, some of our best footage was the spur-of-the-moment shots that were totally unplanned. Lesson: Always keep the camera rolling. 4) Dynamic interview locations. Our best-looking interviews happened while walking by the water, sitting outside at cool restaurants, and in other real-world situations. Sit-down interviews in controlled locations are great for managing sound quality, but with the amazing hardware available today this can be worked around. But, an interview in a cool location that feels natural is way more fun to watch. Lesson: Do interviews in natural, interesting environments. 3) Bring extra lav mics. These are fickle creatures which can break, get their frequencies mixed up, and just go haywire for seemingly no reason. They are also not particularly expensive, but if you need one and don't have it, it's a big problem. Lesson: Pack extra lav mics. 2) Have guests repeat their best lines. Our interviewees would say amazing things, but breeze right past on to new subjects or continue their thought without pausing. However, if you want to get amazing sound bites, it helps to get nice pauses and well-spoken quotes. So, I will use my handy notebook to write down everything we'd like repeated, and have our interviewees re-express these thoughts in a slightly more editable format once there's a lull in the conversation. Lesson: Don't be afraid to have interview subjects repeat the really good stuff. 1) Talk to absolutely everybody you possibly can. We had our interviews planned, and they went great. But we found our un-planned interviews had some of our most-interesting sound bites. So, next time I will treat all the people of the world as my interviewees, be they bartenders, professionals, guys playing chess in the park, or just random people we find on the street. You really never know who has an amazing story to tell, but you can only find out by asking. Lesson: Talk to everyone. Thanks to our great producers @jposhaughnessy, @nicktawil, and @Singlemaltfiend, and @HvVideoStore the greatest cameraman in Detroit history. Big hug you crazy mofos. And for anyone thinking about applying to the OSV Fellowship, it's the opportunity of a lifetime so don't be shy.

Updated trailer for Endangered Voices, our documentary about language preservation and the Norwegian Sami linguistic revolution. 50 years ago their language was almost extinct, today the number of speakers is growing and they speak it in government, schools, and more.
