The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

Yesterday, Tennessee spent 90 minutes trying to find a vein to execute Tony Carruthers. His attorney watched him wince and groan in pain before the lethal injection was finally called off. Governor Bill Lee has granted Tony a one-year reprieve. tennesseelookout.com/2026/05…

Yesterday, Death Penalty Action and our partners at LiveFree Indiana, the Indiana Abolition Coalition, @WorthRises, and several faith leaders hand delivered your petition signatures to executives at Elevatus— the architecture firm hired to help IDOC rebuild their execution unit to accommodate firing squad executions.
For a corporation whose outward presentation gives the impression of a company who is deeply passionate about serving others, their actions clearly reveal another side to them.
No company should profit from the deaths of others.

Notre Dame Law School hosted its second annual Death Penalty Abolition Week from Monday, March 23 to Friday, March 27, 2026. Organized by @NDLawEJC, with @NDHumRts and the Institute for Social Concerns serving as co-sponsors, the week was made possible through a generous donation from Syl Schieber ’72 M.A., ’74 Ph.D., and Vicki Schieber.
Through a series of powerful conversations and firsthand accounts, Death Penalty Abolition Week sought to raise awareness of the tragic miscarriages of justice caused by wrongful convictions, affirm the sanctity of human life, and advocate for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States.
Featured speakers included the Honorable Bob Morris, Indiana Representative; Erin Barnhart ‘05 J.D., a federal public defender, with Elwood Jones, an Ohio death row exoneree; Anthony Ray Hinton, a death row exoneree and author of "The Sun Does Shine"; and Sarah Craft, interim director of the Indiana Abolition Coalition, with Donna Schneweis, director of the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
