Back at CoreNet & this year it's in Chicago. CoreNet brings out Corporate Real Estate leaders from across the U.S. and the World. However, Chicago leaders need to show up as we're missing an opportunity here. I met someone last night that worked with NYEDC (New York Economic Development Council) and when I asked what drew him to the conference, he said "to attract business leaders to doing more business in New York City." So NYC shows up but we don't have anyone from @WorldBizChicago or @P33Chicago or anyone from the Mayor's office here to attract business in our own backyard? We NEED to be doing more & not squandering these great opportunities to court businesses, especially in the host city. CC: @CrainsChicago @JennyGooz @landon20s @susanamendoza10
💡I just got back from the CoreNet conference in Anaheim. I learned a perception about Chicago directly from Fortune 50 leaders in Corporate Real Estate that was upsetting to hear: 1. For companies based on the West Coast look to expand, the comparison isn’t Chicago vs. New York or Miami. If they’ve decided the Midwest makes strategic sense, the real competition is Chicago vs. Atlanta and other business-friendly midwestern markets. 2. Corporate real estate leaders consistently point to examples like Georgia’s tax structure and pro-business regulatory environments as making it significantly easier to open offices and scale teams there. 3. It’s not that Chicago lacks talent, world-class universities, a global airport, or affordability advantages. That's never been the issue...The issue is the perception that Chicago’s business climate is less predictable and less growth-oriented. And employers are actively looking elsewhere. This was said directly by Fortune 50 decision-makers. And it should bother us. They're looking at Chicago and deciding to go elsewhere. CoreNet hosts its conference in Chicago next year and we have a critical opportunity. Chicago’s civic organizations (@P33Chicago, @WorldBizChicago, @mHUBChicago & others) should be front and center at that conference telling Chicago’s story, convening panels, and actively engaging and attracting the companies that shape corporate location strategies. If our civic leadership isn’t consistently attracting the world’s most innovative companies, then we’re missing the moment. We need a stronger, coordinated effort to reshape how corporate leaders perceive Chicago as a destination for growth. Chicago needs to be better or else these companies will continue to grow elsewhere & I'm seeing it play it out real time. CC: @teecogs @landon20s @CrainsChicago @JennyGooz

Great spot. It’s not like the same thin crust like Pizz’Amici but it’s worth putting it into the rotation. The lowkey star however was the GIARDINIERA CHEESE CHURDS

Al Michaels & Kirk Herbstreit keep talking sh*t about the Bears. From all of Chicago: Both of you can

Why does @sama have his sleeves rolled up ALL OF THE TIME? Either (1) he loves the feel of Cashmere or (2) is waiting for a good collection or Cashmere T-Shirts. I’m confident it’s one of these reasons

Can anyone explain how a SMALL restaurant would AVOID going out of business from buying a $2,000 kiosk that also has a required annual subscription service? “Many restaurants that would otherwise go out of business will stay alive” seems like a pretty lofty claim. I am all for hardware (we need more of that!) but again I don’t know how this helps a SMALL restaurant (meaning single location, family owned). Also no printed receipts just means more patrons have to stare down at their phone (presumably) and wait for a text saying “your order is ready!”.. with that I say no thanks. I’d rather order with a human from that lovely SMALL restaurant or at least have a printed receipt (like McDonald’s to compare w/ kiosk experience) to keep my conversation going with the colleague I went to lunch with. This kiosk feels less social. Also I don’t get how service is “more precise”? Every order is printed and is sent to the line on the same screen/piece of paper. What makes a kiosk “more precise”? That tells me that today consumers have LESS control over their order?
Block is going to aggressively deploy these into every small restaurant in America, just as they did with their other point of sale systems. It will be the first time most of these small business owners feel the deflationary impact of AI, because in many cases, it will eliminate the need for extra staff. Customers will get faster and more precise service. Many restaurants that would otherwise go out of business will stay alive, a ripple effect that disproportionately supports the working class families who depend on their success. Congratulations to @jack and @TempletonThomas from a grateful generation of foodies.

Google officially sharing their plans for consolidation of their Fulton offices into Thompson Center was inevitable. For the last 5 years, the CRE space said Class A office demand in Fulton exceeded supply. Between these 2 Google exits and Sidley's new Fulton office, we'll see if all this incoming vacancy is absorbed. I predict the Loop and east of Jefferson St by the river will see a heavier uptick in leasing activity next year.

Props to @claudeai - I refused to pay Jiffy Lube ~$120 for a routine oil change. Claude found me a local mechanic, shared cost estimate & then just booked my appointment. Saved $70 & supported a superb local Chicago biz
