Ahead of John Healey's first Budget, a reminder that companies don’t pay tax - people do. And that also applies to energy suppliers and to banks.
In more technical terms, companies are only legal entities and cannot bear the economic burden of tax themselves. Tax increases are therefore always passed on to real people.
Shareholders will bear some of the cost through lower profits and dividends, although many 'ordinary' people own shares through their pension funds.
But customers will also pay through higher prices, while employees will face lower wages.
Everyone may lose if companies cut jobs and investment or move activity overseas.
So, whenever someone says, “companies should pay their fair share” or “tax banks, not workers”, ask them where the money will really come from… 🤔

🚨Labour’s Employment Rights Act is crippling UK PLC, even before it's fully implemented.
SMEs are under threat, while uncertainty undermines business confidence as it goes through the implementation process.

Labour's employment reforms REJECTED by workers as Britons turn back on trade unions

The Employment Rights Act is already damaging labour market dynamism in Britain.
But the government *still* has the chance to ease the burden on SMEs across the country who are staring down the barrel of a £600mn bill.
Let's exempt SMEs from mandated trade union access.

If low public investment is the "cause of our productlvity problem", and Labour is going to ramp it up (and do loads of other brilliant stuff too), why has the OBR still downgraded its forecasts? 🤷♀️

Thought for the day... 🤔
Only someone with a name like 'Torsten' could think a 'smorgasbord' of tax increases is appealing... 😉
'Dog's breakfast' is far more accurate!

"EU demands UK pay into budget as part of relationship ‘reset’..." 🤔
My main takeaway: reset talks are not going well and the deal is far from done. This will make it harder for the OBR to score any 'benefits' - especially if the UK has to pay for them!

Ahead of Rachel Reeves's Spending Review tomorrow, my latest "When the Facts Change" post asks:
"Who Will Stand Up For Reality?"
All the major UK parties are now loudly championing big government spending and yet more state borrowing, as they no doubt will during tomorrow’s Spending Review.
This despite the now screamingly obvious financial dangers of this strategy – and a debt interest bill that is already twice what the UK spends on defence, more than the state spends on schools and transport combined.
Yes, I know that when you ask voters if they want more public spending now, then lots of them say “of course”. Almost everyone will say that when asked by a pollster if they want more “free stuff”. But the majority of people also know in their bones that at some point the music will stop and ultimately they want to be led by someone who gets that.
And, of course, the public will be absolutely furious when the music does indeed stop, and there is major turbulence on government bond markets resulting in serious economic and financial fall-out – fall-out during which it will be the least well-off who suffer the most.
Meanwhile the same politicians and pundits who ignored reality and drove us over the edge will opine: “Why did nobody see this coming”?
While firm fiscal management isn’t politically popular, most voters understand that when it’s needed it’s needed – that's the lesson of the late-1970s, after the UK was bailed-out by the International Monetary Fund, or the early 2010s, following the global financial crisis. These were times when there was widespread clamour for grown-up financial management to rescue the country from chaos.
So who WILL stand up for reality?
That reality is that a situation that is unsustainable will ultimately not be sustained – and the UK's public finances are wholly unsustainable.
My fear is that we’re now at the point that it may take yet another “proper crisis” to shift the political dial, for that lesson to be learnt once more.

Even if you accept the 'doppelganger' approach, these results fail a basic 'sniff test'.
The model-based claim that the UK economy is already 6% (or £140bn) smaller as a result of #Brexit is very hard to square with the actual data. Just one example 👇 (3/3)

These models find a group of economies that performed similarly to the UK before #Brexit and then attribute any divergence afterwards to Brexit.
This wrongly assumes that the UK would have been impacted equally by other shocks (notably Covid and the energy crisis), and ignores other national factors (such as the huge fiscal stimulus in the US)... (2/3)

"Sadiq Khan to attack #Brexit with new research on economic damage" 🤔
The claim here that UK GDP is already 6% smaller than if we were still in the EU is just another rerun of a 'doppelganger' model, so hardly 'new'.
It is also fatally flawed... (1/3)

The Treasury needs to prove the IMF forecasts for a weak UK economy wrong. To do so it needs to go for growth and cut some taxes.

Things are not going great for the economy in Britain, it barely expanded last quarter. On the other hand Germany’s economy contracted last quarter.

The policy of high taxes on energy use for business and individuals coupled with subsidies keeps inflation and public spending high. It also impedes the investment we need in more domestic energy. Time to lower tax and subsidy.

IMF forecasts UK economy languishing behind sanctions-hit Russia this year. Utterly depressing. Government needs to slim down size of the state, sweetened by big tax cuts. The Conservative Party must rediscover the market-inclined Conservatism which has made it so successful.
