In ππππ§ππππ πππ π πΆππ’ππ‘ππ¦ (2024), Dr. Nathanael Mathews revisits the history of a Swahili-speaking Afro-Arab diaspora connecting East Africa and Oman.
Similarly, in πΆπππ πππΜπ (2022), Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse explores the fate of Afro-Belgian MΓ©tis children forcibly separated from their families during Belgian colonial rule in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Despite their different historical contexts, both books illuminate underdocumented diasporic histories whose cultural traces endure across Eastern African societies, Belgium, and Oman.

βLiving in Gitwe, maybe even more than in the rest of Bugesera, meant living on the turf of big, wild animals. The lions and buffalo soon left us in peace, but the elephants were drawn to the banana grove as soon as it was planted, and they feasted all night long. The leopards were forever prowling among the houses. They were like cats: every family had its own. It would come inside in the night.β

βThis is a book of two childrenβs stories of survival. It is not a book for children. Itβs a book for adults about the depravity of adults. A horrifying book. And yet an exquisitely beautiful book, a book honoring the truth of genocide and the use of story and art to heal.β

βPreservation whereby gruesome evidence of the killings was protected from removal and frozen in time comprised the earliest initiatives, which began before the sites were formalized as memorials and a full year before the Genocide Memorial Commission was createdβ¦. The first preservation efforts took place at the Nyarubuye and Ntarama Churches, rendering them places of witness that rendered the genocide viewable long after its occurrence.β

Founded on October 20, 1996, by 12 student survivors at the University of Rwanda, AERG introduced the concept of ππ«ππ’ππ’ππ’ππ₯ πππ¦π’π₯π’ππ¬, which responded to the fundamental question: π»ππ€ πππ πππβπππ ππππππ π π πππ π ππ ππππππ¦ πππ πππππππππ ππ π‘βπ πππ‘πππππ‘β ππ ππππππππ?

βFocusing on the life of Kagaju, a Rwandan mother whose two sons were taken without her consent and adopted by a white Belgian family, this article brings to light the overlooked experiences of Rwandan mothers of colonial MΓ©tis whose mixed-βraceβ children were forcibly removed under Belgian colonial rule and who remain largely absent from both public memory and feminist scholarship. π€ππππ: πΜπππππ πππ πππ£πππ ππ ππΜπππππ by Anna-Marie DeBeer deals with literary representations of the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda.
The focus is a transnational, polyphonic writing project entitled βRwanda: Γ©crire par devoir de mΓ©moireβ (Rwanda: Writing by Duty of Memory), undertaken in 1998 by a group of nine African authors.
This work emphasizes the Afropolitan cultural frame in which the texts were conceived and written. Instead of using Western and Eurocentric tropes, this volume looks at a so-called βminority traumaβ: an African conflict situated in a collectivist society and written about by writers from African origin.
This approach enables a more situated study, in which it becomes possible to draw out the local notions of ubuntu, oral testimonies, mourning traditions, healing and storytelling strategies, and the presence of the βinvisibleβ.
