My internet adventure is strange. I suppose I’m a minor influencer now. Not my intent, but here we are. So…here’s my social media experience: I’m tap dancing on a landmine. My airline follows me, my union & even the FAA follows me. This is not a good feeling. Any one of them can decide to stick a sword in me & I’m done. My undergrad degree is journalism & I have a desire to write. I kind of wish I didn’t, as there is very little personal benefit to posting. I could fly two hours at the airline a month & make a lot more than I get paid by Twitter. I want to post in a way that is relatable & honest. Not necessarily the Gonzo journalism style, but not the polished publicity you often get. I want you to see me setting my alarm for 02:00, flying the redeye, getting my chain yanked by crew scheduling &, like yesterday, screwing up. I still feel ashamed about being late. I’ll eventually live that down, but I think it’s important to convey that the clock rules my life & I make mistakes sometimes. Posting that way can be a problem. The swords are all pointed at me & every once in a while, I get poked. I took a week off last time I got seriously poked, and tried to learn from it. I’m trying to inspire & educate. Aviation has a bit of an access problem, and the barriers can look impossible to overcome if you don’t have an inside connection. They are not, though, and there are plenty of opportunities if you only know where to look. I want to show you where to look & give you a pat on the back as you start your journey. Or as you help your kids start theirs. I studied journalism in part because I thought the doors to aviation were closed to me, but a friend of my Father’s asked me to come visit in the Wing Commander’s office at Kirtland AFB, NM. As it turned out, he was the Wing Commander & it was his office. My father had helped him go from Enlisted to Officer, then he rose through the ranks. Dad had asked a favor. He noted I’d been paying for my own flying lessons & told me he knew how to make the Air Force pay me to fly. Sounded like a good deal; flying lessons were expensive & I was having a hard time affording it. I was starting to go a month between lessons for finances. So, I agreed & Bobby Wright helped me put in my application to the Air Force. I got rejected twice, but on the third attempt, my parents were at my place when I got back from an overnight shift as a security guard & they had a bottle of champagne. That was 26 years ago. There are plenty of other aviation outlets out there, and they do good work. I’m trying to add something they don’t. SO… I owe Colonel Bobby Wright a debt. I owe my Dad, as well. Both have passed away, but the debt remains. This – posting on Twitter, as strange as it sounds – is how I see myself repaying it. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need a special insider to get here. You can do it on your own. I’m also here to tell you that it’s not usually that glorious, that you’ll be pissed at crew scheduling & that you’ll feel like a zombie sometimes. I’m here to tell you that it’s a strain on family life, that it’s going to beat you up, that you have a higher risk of cancer & that you will sometimes fail. You’ll hate yourself for failing. I’m here – in part – to be the antithesis to the glory & the ads, and that means posting some downers sometimes & being honest. I’m also here to tell you it’s fucking awesome & as long as you are in it for the love of defying gravity rather than money or some idea of prestige, you’ll never regret your choice. Getting snowed on at 04:00 while doing the exterior inspection of the jet can be either demoralizing or an affirmation, it just depends on you. I will continue tap dancing on a landmine. Man, I hope it doesn’t blow up, but I gave up on aviation as a young man because I had an idea that they were all supermen, and I wasn’t. It wasn’t true. You can do it. It’s hard, but if you want it, you can have it.

Writing this in my personal capacity, but I have been flying these types of aircraft for more than 20 years, with over 8,000 hours, and have reasonable familiarity with how the charter world operates. I feel compelled to post after seeing commentary about the Lear 60 crash, from missile strikes to DEI to critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls. That last part is what I find most troubling. She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation. She likely knew before many of those calls that she was going to die. I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching. I understand the public interest given the footage and audio. But you do not know the aircraft’s maintenance history, whether there was a structural failure, if any failure was induced by turbulence, overspeed, or overcontrol, or everything happening in that cockpit. I am sure weather will be part of the investigation, but beyond that, it is speculation. The charter industry routinely hires commercial pilots very early in their careers to gain experience alongside an ATP-qualified captain before they move up to the airlines. She would still have the appropriate training, qualifications, and checkouts by an FAA examiner or designee. Let people investigate, learn, and share the facts. Be respectful to those who perished and the families who carry their memories. God bless them and their loved ones.

In the past few years Boeing have taken hits from all quarters. But no matter what you think, this is an astonishing image of a @flydubai aircraft that went well beyond its design limits (30,000 Ft per minute descent rate was reported, a normal rate is about 1500 ft per minute) and held together. That’s robust aviation engineering that Joe Sutter would have been very proud of, and Boeing should be too. Bravo to those off duty pilots who saved the day and landed the aircraft safely in Saudi Arabia.

Broadcast News There’s something about Nebraska farmland that makes me want to stand up straight. Not sure what it is, but every time I pass through this part of the country I find myself trying to stretch my body into the sprawling landscape, and wind up looking vaguely ridiculous. In spite of all the attached images, I wasn’t in Omaha last month to be photographed – at least, not primarily. I was there as a guest of @WellsFargo, who continues to spread their money around America like a farmer, broadcasting seed into the tilth of a plowed field. Did you know that “broadcasting” was a farming term, long before it became the name of my chosen industry? It’s true. Broadcasting was first used to describe a method of distributing seeds that don’t need to be buried deeply, like cover crops, alfalfa, and clover. It allows allows a grower to cover a massive amount of acreage much faster than you could with a precision seed drill. The drawback, is that seeds which are “broadcast” simply land on top of the dirt. Because they lack good seed-to-soil contact and are exposed to the open air, they’re vulnerable to being eaten by birds, blown away by the wind, or drying out before they can germinate. To fix this, farmers will usually follow a broadcast seeder with a light harrow or roller to gently press the seeds into the soil. It occurs to me that my roll in Wells Fargo’s current campaign is akin to that of a seed drill. I’ve been invited to tag along in order to make sure the seeds that Wells Fargo has spread throughout Pennsylvania, Texas, Alaska, North Carolina, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska, have a better chance of taking root in the fickle field of public awareness, where every crop is competing for attention, and every farmer tills from dawn to dusk. Toward that end, I want to tell you about Metro Community College here in Omaha, and their partnership with a local charity called HomeWoven. In short, students enrolled in the Construction and Building Science program at MCC are getting hands-on, real-world experience through structured internship programs managed by a local non-profit called HomeWoven. I’ve met these students, and they’re awesome. Currently, they’re applying their classroom training directly to local construction projects, physically building affordable homes in South Omaha. While HomeWoven addresses neighborhood housing stability, MCC fulfills the essential demand by supplying the skilled workforce required to execute each project. My job was to once again shake hands with the local politicians, (Senator Ricketts, in this case) meet the key people involved, talk to the local media about the importance of reinvigorating the skilled trades, and present a large check on behalf of Wells Fargo - in this case, a $1.25 million investment for a local solution that’s actually working. Pretty great gig. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be today, but for a few great teachers at Essex Community College way back in 1980. They straightened me out, showed me a way forward, and gave me the confidence to try things I never imagined I might be good at. MCC is doing the same thing for a lot of kids entering the skilled trades, and their partnership with HomeWoven is working. Lots of families who could otherwise never afford a new home, are now in one, thanks to a construction program at a local community college, a local non-profit that’s connecting the dots, and a big national bank that’s investing in the towns where they do business. Seems to me, that’s a story worth broadcasting, and a seed worth drilling down on...
