The daily life of medieval soldiers, outside of a formal field army, could be quite unique and interesting to learn, particularly when stationed in garrisons within occupied territories. We have access to hundreds of archival records from captains, lieutenants, and town or village clerks that provide numerous details on this subject during the English Normandy occupation XVth century. A notable example is the town of Lisieux in Normandy. Records reveal that the captain and his lieutenant, struggling to maintain surveillance while simultaneously repairing and improving the town’s ramparts, repeatedly requested reinforcements from other English garrisons in Normandy, requests that, for the most part, did not receive very favorable responses. Between 1441 and 1446, English reinforcements arrived on three occasions from Caen, Pont-l'Évêque, and Pont-Audemer; however, only the first two actually contributed to the "guard and security" of the town. The third instance served merely as a "precautionary" measure, based on rumors, to report the presence of French forces in the region that weren't present. For the detail, these reinforcements arrived in the middle of the night, an occurrence that, on one occasion, nearly triggered a violent clash between the different garrisons as a false alarm.
