Vote for Sean P. O’Donnell in WA Supreme Court Position 4. In the non-partisan race, Judge O'Donnell is supported by former Governors, Gregoire and Locke, along with a host of leaders on both sides of the aisle.
While his opponent has twice been called out by the @seattletimes for being unfit; all while receiving massive funding from trial attorneys regularly suing the state for financial gain and from public unions (still not sure the connection there).

Washington State Supreme Court.
There are five radical partisan candidates.
And their opponents are five reasonable nonpartisan candidates… Larson, O’Donnell, Bloom, Edwards & Stevens.
It’s the single biggest change we can make this election.
Can an STT model make sense of a 135 year old recording?
I tested @MistralAI new Voxtral transcription model on a noisy French phonograph recording of Gustave Eiffel from 1891.
It matched 100 of 107 words in INA’s published excerpts (6.5% WER), while transcribing 75 additional words omitted from the reference.
It handled Eiffel’s dictation well but struggled with proper names and some guest dialogue.
A fascinating test of modern speech recognition on audio from 1891.

Sometimes a project comes along that is genuinely cool... Writing about the work of a Frontier Lab as they develop sovereign solutions ✅'s the box.
When we connected with @IsForAt and team at @MistralAI, we got the chance to engage with a team on the frontier of AI development. What kept coming out in our discussions was one thread: Sovereignty.
So when Brian asked us to marshal our thoughts on the topic and write a Research Brief on the topic, we jumped at the chance.
Stephanie Walter's write-up of this hot topic is definitely worth a read.
Who Controls Your AI? Designing for Choice and Resilience
How Enterprises Can Reduce AI Dependencies While Preserving Performance and Flexibility
Sovereign AI is often reduced to where data resides or where a model provider is headquartered. Enterprise control requires more: the ability to choose where AI runs, govern how it operates, retain the knowledge it accumulates, and replace a provider when requirements change. This paper examines control across data, intelligence, compute, and operations, using HyperFRAME Research’s Sovereignty Layers framework. It outlines how enterprises can reduce critical dependencies and test portability before a disruption forces a change. It also assesses how Mistral’s open-weight models, deployment options, Forge, and Studio can support these goals, and where customers should verify the limits of that control.
Key Takeaways:
Sovereignty Extends Across the AI Stack: Data residency alone does not establish control. Enterprises must understand who controls model access, infrastructure capacity, encryption keys, operating policies, and the authority to change or stop a system.
Dependency Becomes Lock-In When Replacement Is Impractical: Using multiple providers does not automatically create flexibility. Enterprises need to assess whether a critical workload can move without rebuilding integrations, losing operational records, or interrupting the business.
Institutional Knowledge Must Remain With the Enterprise: Workflows, corrections, model adaptations, and evaluations capture how an organisation operates and what it considers a good result. Those assets should remain accessible and reusable when models or providers change.
Resilience Requires a Tested Alternative: An export option is only a starting point. Teams should run workloads on approved alternatives, compare quality, latency, and cost, and confirm that access controls, governance, and recovery procedures still work.
Mistral’s Value Depends on Practical Control: Open-weight models and deployment choice give enterprises more options, while Forge and Studio support customisation and operations. Customers should verify model licenses, data-retention boundaries, regional availability, and the ability to export adaptations, evaluations, and operational records.

When the US switched off Anthropic’s newest models, Europe didn’t get a say in it.
As I came off the board my parting plea was simply: get Europe behind you.
Mistral has everything except a continent that has decided this is worth winning.

I know this narrative is common but it is factually incorrect. Amongst several AI categories the top 1 or top 2 company is European:
- CX: @parloa_ai is German
- Vibe coding: @Lovable is Swedish
- TTS: @ElevenLabs is Polish/British
- Legal: @WeAreLegora is Swedish
- Video: @synthesiaIO is British
- Robotics: @1x_tech is Norwegian/American
And many more that I might have missed out. Behind maybe but just about and fighting hard. Almost none of these companies existed a few years ago!
Marc Andreessen on why he thinks Europe actually wants to be left behind on AI
"Europe seems, I just take them at their word, determined to be left behind. They seem enthusiastic about being left behind. They seem to really badly want that"
"25 years ago, if you did a list of the 50 biggest tech companies in the world, a pretty significant number were European, probably 15 of the top 50. Today you're basically down to Spotify. Which is great. I love Spotify"
"I think they would be very happy if AI didn't happen inside the EU. I think they'd be very happy if social media didn't exist. I think they'd be quite happy to shut up the internet"

Ukraine should be a lesson for countries trusting Starlink for their defense (or even civilian) needs. The same argument applies for AI too. Do not trust proprietary AI from foreign countries in today's geopolitical scenario.

Amazing. The enrollment in Seattle Public Schools is the same as it was in 2014, but there are an extra 1000 full-time employees on the payroll, and the budget has doubled. All while test scores have declined considerably.
Replying to @stevesi
this all from SPD. wish i could find the part time employees that I suspect grew even more, but notice expenditures soared, even if adjust for inflation

🥖 LGTM, le Chonk 🥖
in their latest Mistral Large 4 release, @MistralAI ran a blind Surge human eval across five frontier models - professional software engineers comparing five frontier models on coding quality. the big guy finished #2, first among open-weight models and behind only Opus 5.
most benchmarks can narrowly measure correctness. but human evals get at the deeper stuff: the professional taste, judgment, and maintainability we look for in the real world as well
the difference between passing a set of unit tests vs. getting a "LGTM - ship it"
bien joué, le Chonk ! congrats to the entire Mistral team 🇫🇷
Meet Mistral Large 4, aka Le Chonk.
• 1T parameters, natively multimodal. 49B active.
It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks.
• State-of-the-art on critical workloads, including cyber defense, manufacturing and finance and it surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding.
• Forged in Europe end-to-end and is deployable from Europe via our own Mistral Cloud infrastructure.
• Available to all via API today. Working with cybersecurity partners privately.
Open weights release end of October.
