At the THINC Tourist Summit, Mr. Murtaza A. Jafferjee, Chief Executive Officer of JB Securities, spoke about Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery following the recent crisis. He emphasised the significant role played by Sri Lankan overseas workers in supporting the national economy through remittances. Israel in Sri Lanka, under the guidance of the Embassy of Israel in India, commemorated three years since October 7 — the Hamas terrorist attack in which 1,200 were murdered, victims were raped, mutilated, burned alive, suffocated and tortured. 251 were taken hostage. Israel in Sri Lanka, under the guidance of the Embassy of Israel in India, held a memorial yesterday at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute to mark the third anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attacks. Religious leaders, diplomats, retired military officers, Members of Parliament, and scholars attended the ceremony, which honoured the victims of the attacks and the bonds between Israel and Sri Lanka. Addressing the gathering online, H.E. Reuven Azar, Ambassador of Israel to India and Sri Lanka, said: “Three years have passed since October 7th, 2023, when Hamas launched the most atrocious terrorist campaign that Israel has ever faced, with murder, kidnapping, massacre and rape on an unimaginable scale. More than 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Since that day, Israel has been fighting to restore security across seven fronts. Thankfully, we prevailed.” “Iran and its terrorist proxies are significantly weaker. Our communities in the south, in the north and all over the country are safe. And our economy has bounced to unprecedented levels.” “But October 7th was not only an Israeli tragedy. Among those whose lives were forever changed that day were foreign nationals who had made Israel their home and who stood by the people they cared for until the very end. Their stories are also part of our collective memory, and they remind us of the human bonds that connect our two countries, Israel and Sri Lanka.” “Today, I want to remember two Sri Lankan citizens whose stories are part of the tragedy of October 7th. Anula Ratnayaka, 49, was caring for Etty Molo before she was murdered. She managed to hide Etty, who was visually impaired, under a bed, saving her life. Sujit Yatawara, 48, was caring for Heinz Zollinger. He was murdered alongside the man he cared for. Today, we remember them and we honour them and their courage.” Family members of Anula Weerasinghe and Sujith Yatawara attended at the invitation of Mr Dinesh Rodrigo, Honorary Consul of Israel in Sri Lanka, and shared their memories. Kelum Weerasinghe, husband of Anula Weerasinghe, and the daughter of Sujith Yatawara also addressed the gathering. His excellency Dr Felix Neumann, Ambassador of Germany to Sri Lanka, attended in solidarity with the memory of Israeli, Sri Lankan and German victims of the 7 October attacks and in recognition of the ties between Germany and Israel. A prayer was offered for those killed. Family members of the victims and invited guests lit candles in memory of the more than 1,200 people who lost their lives, followed by a minute of silence. The ceremony concluded with the national anthems of Israel and Sri Lanka.
