Eat a mouthful of grass and you get nothing. It goes in green and comes out green, with a slightly sore jaw for your trouble. Eat straw and you get nothing. Your gut cannot touch cellulose, and it will tell you so for two days. Eat acorns and you get tannins, a bitter mouth and a very long afternoon. Eat bracken and you get a carcinogen with a view. Eat nettles, thistles, gorse, rushes and heather and you get a mouth full of blood and not one calorie. Eat the beet pulp, the oat husks and the spent brewer's grain and you get the sweepings the factory could not sell to a human at any price. Now put the whole hillside in front of a cow. She turns every one of them into steak, butter, cream, milk and a leather coat, on ground that will never grow a lettuce, using four stomachs and a fermentation vat you were not issued. The grass she eats grew on rain and sunlight, for free, on a slope nobody can plough, and she walks up it herself. She is the only creature on earth that can take a field of inedible fibre and hand you back the most nutrient-dense food there is, and she does it while being told she is the problem. She is eating the 90% of the planet's plants that you cannot. Nobody at the table was going to touch them. Best plant-based diet ever invented. It just has a cow in the middle doing the chewing.

Oh John Lewis missed a trick with the KST ad. Surely as 1st desk she could send Jackson Lamb and the Slow Horses to go to JL to buy presents for her staff and chaos could have ensued. Store locked down, River punching security guards Jackson buying deodorant? #JohnLewisChristmas

Today thousands of farmers are trying to access #SFI26 while drilling crops & running businesses. Farmers want to produce food and deliver environmental outcomes. What they need from government is certainty, stability and confidence to invest. @CLAEast @CLAtweets

🚨Jamie Carragher on Igor Jesus’ disallowed goal against Coventry: 🗣️ Jamie Carragher: “Forest will go home with no points today, but the big question will always be that disallowed goal. I believe Igor Jesus’ goal should have stood. Yirenkyi goes down, VAR says Jesus clips his heel, but honestly, it’s incredibly soft. Yes, there’s contact. I’m not denying that. But is that really enough to overturn a goal? I’ve seen much more contact allowed to go, and that inconsistency is becoming impossible to ignore. Forest were on the receiving end of a horrible VAR decision today. When you look at the replay, you’re asking yourself how that can possibly be enough to rule out a goal. It feels like VAR is searching for reasons to intervene instead of looking for clear and obvious errors. If this is the standard now, then every goal, every challenge and every bit of contact is going to be dragged under the microscope. Forest had every right to feel furious. They fought for the result, found the breakthrough, and then watched it get wiped out over a touch that barely looked like a foul. That decision completely changed the mood of the game. Instead of talking about Forest’s performance, everyone is talking about another baffling VAR call. That tells you everything. They’ve lost the game, and that’s football. But this wasn’t just a minor decision. It was a massive moment, and in my opinion, Forest were badly let down by VAR. If that goal is disallowed, then officials need to explain exactly what the threshold is. Because right now, nobody seems to know. The rules look different every week, and supporters are left feeling like the outcome depends on whoever is sitting in the VAR room. Forest will feel robbed tonight, and honestly, I can understand why. That was not a clear and obvious error. It was VAR involving itself in a decision that should never have been overturned.”

Britain banned the battery cage in 2012 and left the battery egg perfectly legal to import, and this morning it told pregnant women to be careful with eggs. Over 200 cases. One person dead. Imported eggs. The Food Standards Agency has also confirmed British eggs are fine, British hens are vaccinated, and there is no link to anything on a British shelf. Both statements, same morning, same building. So the advice went out about eggs. In general. To the nation. The photograph on the news was a runny yolk on toast rather than a customs shed. A British producer vaccinates every flock, tests beyond what the law asks, stamps a date on every shell, keeps traceability back to the farm and submits to audits nobody warns him about. A lorry from Poland arrives at a border where eggs are classed as medium risk. That is the official term for looking at some of them and testing none of them for salmonella. Imports up 60 per cent since 2021. Three missed government deadlines on border controls. An industry report in March called Shell Shocked, warning that exactly this would happen, filed in the drawer marked farmers being dramatic again. It is August and somebody has died. The same agency spent twenty-nine years telling vulnerable people to avoid runny eggs, then lifted the warning in 2017 because British farmers had spent hundreds of millions of their own money solving the problem. Nine years later the warning is back on, earned by somebody else, worn by them. World-leading standards for the people who produce our food. An open gate for everybody who does not. Then a man from the ministry on the news, warning the country about its hollandaise.
