Loved digging into this story, w/ Steve Arnold and his family in SW Kansas, about how they opted turn off irrigation on the farm nearly 20 yrs ago. As they near retirement, we talked a lot about potential regrets and what the future may look like in such a dry area:
Like most farm families in the far southwestern corner of Kansas, the Arnolds long relied on irrigation for a portion of their crops. They decided to turn the water off 18 years ago, even though the water still flowed and it meant changing everything. Now, as they work to pass down the farm, they are convinced that even where it rarely rains, a prosperous farm and a fruitful life can grow. Read the full story by @JReichPF 🔗 dtn.link/6z12ef2m

Was offered $18.5k in '05 in Ark City, KS. I said smaller papers had already offered more. Editor closed his office door, "We can go up to $19k, but you'd be making more than a lot of people in the newsroom." Ultimately got $22.5k to cover JoCo KC suburb preps for weekly paper

American-made drones. The future lies down a mile of crumbly blacktop on the farthest edge of the Houston metro area. Hylio AgDrones embraces both its roots in Texas and in the United States. Its Houston-area plant can churn out 5,000 drones a year. Senior Editor @JReichPF writes: dtn.link/7gvik7qy

Foreshadowing. The shadow of downtown KC casts on to high level clouds above the K. One of the coolest pictures I think I’ve gotten lucky enough to take at the K. Especially with where we will be moving to. So cool.

Positive attitudes mostly. Airport people very nice and helpful. United people so far very nice and helpful. Saw a ICE guy give candy to a kid. Said be brought 200 suckers and was down to about 20.

Made it! 2 hours, 38 minutes. Lot of excitement. Woman behind me broke up w/ her boyfriend bc he didn’t get out of his car to hug her or get her bag when he dropped her off. Lot of screaming into the phone. They may have gotten back together by the time we got to the front.

Wheat harvest has always been my favorite time of year on the farm, but I'd never been able to get my daughters "home" to see it. That finally changed. My very personal story, and the cover of the March issue of @dtnpf Progressive Farmer: #Agtwitter dtnpf.com/agriculture/web/ag…
