Robbie Avila update from Josh Schertz: “Robbie has been and remains enrolled at SLU and will continue to be around the team as an alum until he makes a final determination on next steps. He’s eligible to compete and to practice, we have no timetable when he will know next steps.”

I don’t think European soccer is all that much more “authentic” than MLS. FIFA, UEFA, the European league executives and most team ownerships are overwhelmingly money hungry and corporate too. The authenticity is the fans and community and you can build that anywhere

“You only hate MLS because you’re a eurosnob.” No. I dislike it because it’s fake. It’s a product engineered in boardrooms. Expansion teams, manufactured rivalries, designated players, plastic atmosphere. WWE on grass. Authenticity isn’t about marketing. You either have it or you don’t.

Josh Schertz said he’ll talk to Robbie Avila this weekend about whether he wants to try to play for SLU or “cash in on his last year” elsewhere. There remain legal obstacles to play anywhere. Avila has practiced with the Billikens in recent days, which is allowable for alumni.

Important context is that Robbie initially filed his case in Cook County, IL and that judge ruled he didn’t have jurisdiction. It’s not like Avila was shopping his case and looking for a SLU educated judge and Goodman kinda implies that here

No one is a bigger fan of Robbie Avila as a person and player than me, and I would love to see him in college for another year, but all this continues to be a joke with the courts. Judge Jason Sengheiser graduated from Saint Louis and also got his law degree from Saint Louis.

I think a key for conceptualizing a post-Robbie Avila SLU and specifically Trey Green’s role is how he was used on the MoKan team that won Peach Jam, where he was essentially the conductor of a wildly talented team. He keeps an offense moving and that’s hugely underrated
