Two things are true 1. Economists are, in expectation, correct about the effects of any given policy and you’d be foolish to ignore them 2. Economists are, by and large, not in the business of asking “What the hell is water?” style questions about our economy.
Most people who study the economy for a living (economists) are not Marxists or socialists. That should tell us something.

Captivated by this fascinating paper. In the history of technological unemployment, nothing is as simple as it seems.

In terms of economics output per £, fixing @LSEEcon’s coffee machine might be the highest impact grant ESRC could make
The coffee machine at the 4th floor of @LSEEcon has been broken for months, and our PhD students are sarcasm-bombing it

These fake men’s fashion girls are always a year + behind in what’s going on in actual men’s fashion, the trickle down that they’ve received is directly from one of their friends’ boyfriends in the west village. They don’t know shit

I paid off all my student loans. Why would I pay income tax?
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

The purpose of getting a degree in PPE is so that you can experience regret when you go to a cocktail party and everyone is crowded around the person with the economics degree.
is PPE just a degree in being good at cocktail parties

Mark Carney, as Bank of England Governor, interfered in the vital Brexit vote by publicly warning of recession and financial chaos if Britain left the EU. He denied taking sides, yet Conservative MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg exposed his bias and demanded he resign for violating the Bank’s required political neutrality. ⬇️⬇️

Indicting the UK’s “fiscal mess” and welfare spending is strange given that almost all growth in the last four years has been driven by public service volumes and associated spending, especially health.
It's a remarkable endorsement for Britain's ingeniosity that despite: - The highest energy prices in the OECD - Dismal infrastructure/housing - Welfare state that gives terrible incentives - Fiscal mess - Brexit (?) The UK is outperforming many of its Euro neighbors on growth

Astounding revelation from @SecSmithEllis's time as NJ Higher Ed commissioner: public university president refused to name how much state $$ would enable her to set tuition transparently, affordably, and progressively. Because maximizing extraction is how you get the next job. /1

at some level you gotta engage with the fact that Americans can read ~90% of major novels for free via their library and don't do it
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

Today CPE is publishing some revisionist history about BIL and IRA: Because the laws didn't touch muni markets and focused more on infra grants than loan authorities, they didn't juice local economic development much. Here's a short note laying out how we could change that:

Fascinating how many interesting, very smart young people (young men particularly) interested in policy I've met in NYC who refer to themselves as socialists or DSA-adjacent, but when you talk to them they seem to have at most, the views of market-friendly social democrats
