Reza Valizadeh, an American journalist being held inside Iran's notorious Evin Prison since 2024, shared a recording where he detailed the conditions of the facility and the health of another imprisoned American, Kamran Hekmati.
Now, as the Trump administration looks to end the war in Iran, Valizadeh's lawyer Ryan Fayhee says it's essential that President Trump prioritize the release of wrongfully detained Americans in his negotiations with Iran.

As Iran partially lifted its nationwide internet blackout, CBS News' @MargBrennan heard an American journalist's plea for help. Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh, who the U.S. says is wrongfully detained inside a notorious prison, is one of six Americans being held by Iran.

Authoritarian nationalism in Hungary has just been defeated. And Orban, in a rare act of grace, appears to have accepted it. Bad day for Putin. Not a good day for MAGA. Good for the US, Ukraine, Europe, & the free world.

Exactly. No American interest is served by choking America’s voice and the voices of freedom for the world. @JacksonDiehl @RFERL
I agree with my colleague @RepYoungKim: Reforms at the USAGM are necessary, but cutting the agency silences the voices of freedom-loving people around the world. Hostile actors like China, Russia & Iran will swoop in and fill the gap, endangering the USA nationalreview.com/2025/03/w…

VOA has made a significant impact on the world since World War II and continued to do so until this past Saturday.
I’ve already told you how, during the Chornobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, many Ukrainians first learned about it through VOA radio broadcasts from the U.S. The Russian-Soviet government never informed its people that they were slowly dying from radiation exposure.
But even more recently, I’ve been receiving messages from Ukrainians living under Russian occupation in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. They reached out to tell me they were watching every VOA show. For them, it was a glimpse of freedom and hope for future liberation.
To do so, they have to use fake names on social media and remain as discreet as possible because if the Russians found out they were listening to VOA, these people under occupation could pay with their lives.

I once received an electric shock during torture only for writing for Radio Liberty: I was told that it was "a CIA structure and an enemy of Russia", and for that reason alone I was already guilty.
Now, the "enemy of Russia" is being destroyed by America itself, and my torture seems doubly in vain.
Here is a strong Washpost editorial explaining why Trump’s shutdown of Radio Free Europe, Voice of America and other U.S. broadcasters is a gift to the world’s dictators. (It’s also illegal and unconstitutional.) washingtonpost.com/opinions/…
