Canada has the lowest net debt in the G7, the strongest credit rating, and debt servicing costs well below historical levels. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful with public money. It means we have choices.
And in a trade war and an uncertain world, having choices matters.

The Equalization formula that many Albertans blame the federal Liberals for was actually designed by an Alberta civil servant (Al O’Brien) and turned into law by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.
When the system was renewed without changes, the Liberals simply kept the Conservative design.
The system Albertans protest most was built by Alberta political leaders.
• Stephen Harper (MP for Calgary Southwest).
• Jason Kenney (MP for Calgary Southeast).
• Rona Ambrose (MP for Edmonton—Spruce Grove).
• Jim Prentice (MP for Calgary Centre-North).
• Diane Ablonczy (MP for Calgary—Nose Hill).

The Prime Minister and I have found common ground on many things over the last 18 months. However, it appears that he has yet to fully understand just how damaging the open-border policies of his predecessor were. Those policies caused Canada’s cost of living to skyrocket, overwhelmed our social services, and made homes and jobs unattainable for thousands of young Canadians.
That’s why I’m encouraging Albertans to vote ‘yes to the rest’ to give our government a strong mandate to take more control over our immigration system, so that we can prioritize economic migrants, put Albertans first for jobs, and ensure Albertans’ social services are sustainable. We’re also asking for a strong mandate to work with willing provinces to reform the courts, abolish the senate, and protect provincial jurisdiction.
I look forward to hearing from Albertans on October 19th.

1/ The misinformation circulating about Canada’s new Express Entry changes is getting ridiculous. Canada is NOT handing high-paying jobs to immigrants. Please stop confusing immigration selection with employment.
2/ Here’s what IRCC actually announced: candidates with qualifying Canadian work experience or job offers in certain high-wage occupations may receive additional points toward permanent residence. That’s it. Additional points. NOT guaranteed selection. NOT guaranteed PR. And certainly NOT guaranteed employment.
3/ Someone working in AI, engineering, healthcare, or another eligible occupation may receive more points because Canada wants to attract and retain talent that can contribute to its economy. But that person still has to meet immigration requirements, compete for an invitation, and go through the application process. Even after obtaining PR, nobody is handing them a job. They still have to compete in the labour market like everyone else.
4/ And since we’re talking about immigrants supposedly “taking jobs,” let’s look at who is doing some of Canada’s most essential work. According to Statistics Canada, immigrants and non-permanent residents made up 44.8% of nurse aides, orderlies, and patient service associates in 2021. These are people caring for patients, supporting elderly residents, and doing physically and emotionally demanding work that keeps our healthcare system functioning.

5/ Many immigrants work long hours in these essential sectors, sometimes while studying, supporting their families, or rebuilding their careers in a new country. Their contributions matter just as much as those of immigrants working in AI, medicine, or engineering. You cannot celebrate their labour when it’s convenient and then portray them as a threat when they become eligible for better economic opportunities.
6/ Of course, we should debate immigration policy. We should question the removal of LMIA requirements, labour-market priorities, and whether these changes will deliver the intended economic benefits. But those debates should be grounded in facts. Canadian graduates struggling to find employment is a legitimate concern. Blaming immigrants through a misleading interpretation of Express Entry is not a solution.
7/ Immigration is not a government program that distributes jobs to newcomers. Express Entry determines who may be invited to apply for permanent residence. Employers determine whom to hire. These are different processes. We can have serious conversations about immigration, employment, and Canada’s economy without turning immigrants into scapegoats. Criticize policies. Debate their consequences. But please stop spreading misinformation.

In a republic, the answer is Congress, the courts, and the Constitution.

Immigration causing unemployment is a long-established economic fallacy that, like all economic fallacies, only appeals to people who don’t understand basic economics.
It cannot be understated: our broken immigration system has caused high unemployment, high home prices and high inflation. It must be fixed and provincial rights strengthened.
Today, the Prime Minister got a copy of our referendum questions including the 9 on immigration and constitutional reforms. If Albertans give us a strong mandate on these questions, our government will get right to work on these needed reforms.
And as I’ve said many times, please vote for Option 1, a strong Alberta within a united Canada, and yes to the rest! 🍁
