Four things you control on every hard day:
Your attitude.
Your effort.
Your actions.
Where you choose to focus.
Everything else is weather. Put your energy into the four.
When I tore my Achilles, I learned two questions that still get me unstuck:
So what?
Now what?
The first one accepts what happened. The second one gets you moving again.
When I get home, my phone goes on Do Not Disturb for 20 minutes and my family gets all of me.
I teach this in my keynotes, and nobody has ever come back and told me they missed the call.
Try it tonight.
A thermometer tells you the temperature in the room. A thermostat sets it.
Every team has both kinds of people.
On your hardest day this week, be the thermostat.
Every time I've grown, I had to answer the same question first:
Will I protect my image, or pursue my potential?
You can protect how you look, or raise your standard. You can't do both.
A CEO left a comment on one of my posts: "Still the best keynote to date for us."
Then their team booked me again.
That second booking means more to me than the comment.
2016 was the best year my business ever had.
2017 I was dodging creditor calls in a parking lot.
Nothing blew up in between. I just stopped competing the way I did on the way up.

Controversial take: It's a great position to not care about the results of any election because you know you'll win regardless.
No stress, no outrage, just locked in.
Bet on yourself always...external things can change like the wind.
A great Q4 creates the conditions for a bad March.

Drift doesn't announce itself.
No alarm. No bad quarter. No big mistake.
Just a treadmill moving backward at 0.00001 mph until you fall off.
Best plan I heard from a client this year: "Let's crush it at what we have before we do anything else."
No new initiative. A higher standard on the work already in front of you. That's a killer focus.
A meeting planner has to defend her speaker choice to her boss on Monday.
Adjectives won't help her. Logos, numbers, and repeat clients will.

The big moments get the credit.
The margins decide the outcome.

A customer told me she bought the shirt with the big print on the front so she could read it in the mirror as a reminder.
That's the whole point.
A standard you see every day is harder to drift from.

People may take issue with the language I use here but I stand by it.

Want to win, don’t NEED to win.
Care deeply, commit fully, compete freely.
Competitive Joy.
NLCS MVP Jake Bauers shares how letting go of results helped him find a different level of freedom as a competitor.
"I think what changed for me this year was I stopped caring about results. I started caring about competing. I started caring about being in the moment and getting out of my own way."
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle to performing at your best isn't a lack of preparation or ability.
It's the pressure you place on yourself to produce a particular outcome.
You become so concerned with what you want to happen that you lose touch with what the moment actually requires.
Any performer can unlock a new level when they learn how to be fully invested in the competition without becoming imprisoned by the outcome.
