“The amount of time we spent grading and the amount of time the kids spent on homework - we thought that maybe we could shift that time into other forms of assessment and practice.” - Keenan Clark teacherbilldavidson.com/podc… podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… @JakeTowers3 @KeenanClark3

Friday was “Math Fun Day” in our department. All math classes were suspended and classrooms were transformed into math games/experiments labs. Students chose between dice games, making paper airplanes, catapult designs and other activities. 100% participation and engagement.

We ended the summer with a little outing for the senior football players. Thank you to the National Guard for taking care of us today after working them out last week at the field. I appreciate your help in making us a better team! Special thanks to Coach Tuttle for coordinating!

Agree 100%. Check out our reasoning for eliminating homework grades from your grade books. skillsbasedclassroom.com/pos…
5 reasons young students don't need homework: 1. They need time for play and exploration 2. Overburdened Schedules 3. Stress/ anxiety/ even burnout 4. Inequity and accessibility: Not all students have equal access to resources 5. Limited or no impact on achievement What Else?

We approach this topic with our Skills Assessments. These are short, formative assessments that also act as summative data to guide instruction in our classrooms. Read more below! skillsbasedclassroom.com/pos…
We can walk & chew gum. Most assessment evidence should not be quantified, steer clear of a gradebook, & be used formatively. AND We can periodically examine the preponderance of evidence to verify learning (i.e., summative purpose) It's not a zero-sum game. #ATAssessment

. @KeenanClark3 and I spent months building the Skills Based Classroom. We have 3 semesters of data showing this helps kids learn. Change can be scary, but change can also lead to great things.

Here are the top 5 players who create the most wins for their team every time they play ⬇️ 1. Xavier Johnson - 0.27 WCr/GP 2. Jonathan Mogbo - 0.25 WCr/GP 3. Terrence Shannon - 0.24 WCr/GP 4. Hunter Dickinson - 0.24 WCr/GP 5. Zach Edey - 0.24 WCr/GP For reference, Zach Edey ranked 1st in our WCr/GP stat with 0.26 wins created per game played last season. Our WCr/GP is calculated through using our player efficiency data to calculate their role in expected team performance. @xav1erj0 @j_mogbo @Sn1per_T @H_Dickinson24 @zach_edey 🔥

Take a minute and watch this! Taking time to focus on what “good learning” should look like can make everything else so much easier. Learning should be an educator’s biggest factor when establishing the rest of their classroom expectations.
Replying to @MrOrr_geek
@Mrorr_geek stresses the need to establish personal values for a successful math class and ensure that all classroom decisions align with these values to promote effective learning. Listen in: makemathmoments.com/episode1… #iteachmath #MTBoS #edchat #mathchat

Well put…Learning should be the target and behavioral norms should support the learning. It seems so obvious. Unfortunately, the goal in some classes has been behavioral modification, with classroom assessments designed to act in a supporting role.
