Zelenskyy Turns to Norway for an Alternative to Elon Musk’s Starlink
During talks in Oslo, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Norway to help develop alternative satellite communications capabilities, reducing Ukraine’s dependence on Elon Musk’s Starlink.
The strategic implications extend far beyond Ukraine. Satellite communications are essential military infrastructure, and dependence on a single American provider creates a serious vulnerability when access can be restricted.
Norway, with its advanced space and defence industries, could become an important partner in building independent European capabilities.
This is increasingly Europe’s strategic priority: replacing critical dependencies with systems it can control.
The message is unmistakable. European security cannot depend on one billionaire’s decisions.

Trump says 74-year-old teacher Stephen Hubbard, seized during Russia’s occupation of Izium in April 2022, has been freed after he asked Putin for his release. Hubbard is on his way home. Good. Now look at the price Putin appears to have extracted.
THE TRADE
Trump says people who urged him to impose the Graham sanctions called to apologize after learning he was negotiating for Hubbard. He has waived those sanctions and lifted restrictions on Russian diesel. He has also demanded that Ukraine stop hitting Russian refineries. Ukraine kept striking them, and Trump turned his anger on Zelensky.
The October 9 breakdown delayed Witkoff’s trip to Russia and Hubbard’s release by roughly a week. Trump made his arrangements with Putin without warning Kyiv or European allies, then blamed Kyiv when the talks fell apart. Restrictions on Starlink and the loss of early ballistic-missile warnings followed.
THE NEXT LEVER
Fifteen more Americans remain in Russian custody. Hubbard’s return is welcome. But Putin now has fifteen more chances to offer Trump a homecoming while seeking concessions from him at Ukraine’s expense.
