In the middle of World War Two, German soldiers in southeastern Poland started avoiding a cluster of villages. They wouldn't go in. They wouldn't take people out for forced labor. They put up warning signs and stayed away. They believed the area was infected with typhus. It wasn't. Two doctors had invented the whole thing. The man behind it was Eugene Lazowski, a young Polish doctor working for the Red Cross in the town of Rozwadów. He was watching the Nazi occupation tear his country apart. Executions. Deportations. People shipped off to labor camps, many never coming back. He wanted to stop it. He had no weapons, no army, and no way to fight. What he had was medicine. His friend and fellow doctor, Stanisław Matulewicz, had discovered something strange. If you injected a person with a harmless, dead strain of a certain bacteria, their blood would test positive for typhus. They wouldn't be sick at all. But on paper, they'd look like they had one of the most feared diseases of the war. And the Germans were terrified of typhus. It spread fast, it killed, and it could tear through an army. When the Germans found it, they quarantined the area and kept their distance. Lazowski realized what that meant. If he could make enough people look infected, the Germans would leave the whole region alone. So he started injecting his patients. He chose carefully. He sent the blood samples to German labs for testing, exactly as the rules required. The results came back positive. Again and again. The Germans declared an epidemic zone. Villages were quarantined. Soldiers kept out. People who would have been seized for forced labor or worse were left alone, because nobody wanted to go near them. Lazowski had to be careful. If too many cases looked fake, someone would ask why nobody was dying. So he spread out the injections over time and kept the outbreak believable. Eventually the Germans did get suspicious. They sent a team of doctors to inspect. Lazowski met them with food and vodka and played the gracious host. He guided them toward the sickest looking, dirtiest patients he could find, in the most crowded rooms. The German doctors, worried about catching typhus themselves, took a few samples and left in a hurry. The tests came back positive. The fake epidemic lasted until the end of the war. Estimates say it may have protected around 8,000 people. Lazowski also secretly helped Jews from the nearby ghetto, giving them medical care at enormous risk. After the war he moved to the United States and became a professor of pediatrics in Chicago. For decades he barely talked about what he'd done. Late in life he finally wrote a memoir. He called it My Private War. He died in 2006. He never fired a shot. He beat the Nazis with a needle and a lab test.

A fascinating essay on how Official Ireland's naked hostility to the world's only Jewish State could end up harming Ireland's high-tech sector Not a day goes by now without journalists and policy analysts noticing the unhinged, irrational obsession with Israel and Jews in Irish political discourse, particularly among the left/nationalist opposition parties and in academia/NGO sector For those people who want to see both Ireland and Israel thrive, it's incumbent to speak out against those who want Dublin break ties with Jerusalem completely

Last night, the exit polls told one story: Netanyahu had lost, but it wasn’t clear who on the other side had won. This morning, the results are telling another. Netanyahu hasn’t won yet, but the change bloc has clearly lost. I’ve covered politics since the start of the century. I have never seen a camp organize for an election as impeccably, as efficiently and as energetically as the change bloc did. It signed model surplus-vote agreements, so that no leftover votes would go to waste, and ran an unprecedented operation flying Israelis home from abroad to vote. And by the actual count, it ended up with more or less the same number of seats as in the last election. Demography beat energy, and the message also proved flawed and unsuccessful. The public wasn’t convinced that the war had been a total victory, as Netanyahu claimed, but it also refused to buy the opposition’s claim that it was a total failure. It was repelled by Haredi draft-dodging, but didn’t think the solution was a minority government propped up by draft refusers and anti-Zionists. It was disgusted when ultra-Orthodox protesters chanted “We do not believe in the rule of the Zionists,” but it was just as shocked when “Biladi, Biladi,” the Palestinian national anthem, was sung at the Joint List’s headquarters last night. Netanyahu’s position changed completely between the release of the exit polls and the arrival of the real results. Last night it seemed clear that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, a Likud loyalist, would be ousted and that, one way or another, Gadi Eisenkot, the former IDF chief of staff, would form a minority government. Now, by the criteria Eisenkot himself set, he has lost the legitimacy to form such a government. He promised he wouldn’t rely on the Arab parties’ votes, yet without a majority he would now need the active support of the Joint List, which looks futile and pointless. In post-October 7 Israel, there is no chance that a coalition including six candidates who lost immediate family to Hamas could last long alongside Joint List lawmakers who claim Hamas is simply a charitable organization. After the 1967 war, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan famously said Israel was waiting for the Arabs to call. In the same spirit, Netanyahu in effect told the change camp before dawn: here’s my phone number, feel free to use it. Yisrael Beiteinu’s Avigdor Lieberman, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Eisenkot now face a dilemma from hell. They can go to another election, one that Israelis abroad will no longer fly home for. They can try to join Netanyahu’s bloc on tough terms, breaking their campaign pledges never to sit with him. Or they can beg the Islamist Ra’am and the Joint List, now drunk on their success, for support. And one final note: for the entire campaign, we searched for a third bloc, a centrist unity bloc between Netanyahu and his rivals. Candidates included Benny Gantz and former UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan, former general Ofer Winter and economist Yaron Zelekha, former Culture Minister Hili Tropper and who even remembers who else. They all collapsed, evaporated or vanished. And now it turns out the unity bloc may have been the Arab parties all along. Their historic, almost hysterical turnout, at rates that will need careful examination, shattered both sides’ dreams of a 61-seat majority. It reminded Jews on both sides that, after years of division, they may have to learn to sit together after all. newsletter.amitsegal.net/p/i…

Back in August, an Irishman in a French hypermarket struck up a friendly chat with two Australian tourists about a football shirt. Then, the conversation turned to Ireland’s stance on Israel. Minutes later, he told the woman, a Jew whose relatives were murdered at Auschwitz, that he’d "put a f***ing bullet in [her] head." Last week, an Avignon court convicted Patrick O’Brien, a 60-year-old originally from Dublin, of death threats aggravated by antisemitism and of attempting to justify crimes against humanity. According to the couple, he also told them he was sorry Hitler hadn’t “finished the job.” The Irish Independent’s report omits that detail, choosing instead to quote O'Brien's description of himself as a “committed humanist.” In Ireland, we are told constantly that criticism of Israel has nothing to do with hostility to Jews. We see how quickly that distinction collapses in practice. A general argument about state policy quickly became a targeted death threat against a Jew. And when police searched O'Brien's home, they found what the prosecutor called further evidence “of a racist nature.” Israel didn’t create O'Brien's bigotry. It allowed him to express it under the familiar veneer of the moral crusader, the "committed humanist." Last night 13,000 people filled the 3Arena for a "Free Palestine" Macklemore concert that within minutes devolved into an anti-Israel hate rally. Our culture now regards hostility to Israel as a civic virtue, but we should ask how far it is from threatening actual violence to the small number of Jews who live here. independent.ie/irish-news/ir…

Patrick O'B who hurled antisemitic abuse, including a death threat at a Jewish couple in a supermarket in France has just been handed a 6 month suspended prison sentence and a fine. This is a much heftier punishment than many may think. Forget the 'suspended' part for a moment. If he makes any similar threatening statement he will go to prison and this may apply to him for the rest of his life. He how has a criminal record which disqualifies him from travelling to a number of countries including the U.S.A. It may also affect his credit rating and his ability to apply for a whole range of jobs in the public sector. If he is an individual with no experience of the criminal justice system and who has hitherto had an unblemished record, this sentence will be deeply shocking to him. In the end, the only defence against the tide of threatening and casual antisemitic abuse is the application of the law. Such abuse can never be cost free.
The face of pure hatred. An Irish citizen visiting France, tells two Jewish visitors he's sorry Hitler didn't finish the job. They started videoing him and he threatens to kill them. Identified himself as "Paddy from Ireland".

Last Friday, the Irish Times published a letter by Fintan Drury dripping with overt disdain for the Irish Jewish community and for Jews who support the state of Israel. The letter was in response to Fintan O'Toole's recent article regarding attitudes towards Zionism and antisemitism in Ireland. The letter fell far below the standards of The Irish Times’ own charter which is highlighted in the lobby of its HQ. - “The Irish Times Trust “that news shall be as accurate and as comprehensive as is practical and be presented fairly.” “That comment and opinion shall be informed and responsible and shall be identifiable from fact.” “That special consideration shall be given to the reasonable representation of minority interests and divergent views” Here is my reply. Fintan Drury’s latest missive has left me in a state of confusion. He claims that his ‘awareness’ of the Holocaust is a strong motivating factor for his advocacy for Palestinian justice. The Holocaust arose from a single goal - the extermination of all European Jewry, the deadliest manifestation of antisemitism in the history of the Jews. I assume Fintan Drury accepts this premise. So why has he just invoked classical examples of antisemitism in objection to Fintan O’Toole’s recent article warning of the dangers of minimizing antisemitism in Ireland? Drury’s claims that Israel is a settler colonial entity, that it is an apartheid state and that Zionism is racist are ahistorical, intellectually incontinent and have become tired slogans promoted by advocates who believe that if they repeat them relentlessly, they will become the truth. Using the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism his claims represent clear examples of what many consider antisemitism. The recent motion passed by the Green Party in the UK that Zionism is Racism has been condemned by every single party in the UK who rightly declare the motion to be antisemitic. More disturbing, however, is Drury’s statement that ‘we must take on Ireland’s Zionist lobby.’ This resonates strongly with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a fabricated antisemitic text created by the Tsarist secret police in 1903 promoting the false claim of a Jewish conspiracy which warns of a global Jewish cabal who control the economies of the world. The tiny Jewish community to which I belong seeks to live in Ireland with exactly the same rights and protections as its fellow citizens. To suggest that it lobbies on behalf of the government of any other country is to invoke one of the most toxic antisemitic tropes, the accusation of dual loyalty. No other ethnic minority is similarly charged. This accusation was a cornerstone of Nazi propaganda which, under Josef Goebbels, evolved into campaign to dehumanize German Jews. And as a finale, Fintan Drury tells us that he’s happy to have Jewish friends who agree with him. Since I support the State of Israel but oppose many of its government’s policies, just like millions of Israelis, am I therefore expected to take a Jewish purity test to be acceptable to him? That did not work out so well, last time similar demands were made of European Jews. Why the Irish Times published a letter brimming with such bias and factual indolence is, itself disturbing. The only possible value to reading these words in print is to amplify the importance of Fintan O’Toole’s words of caution. Oliver Sears

Me - only in the evening. Heading now to a six-hour observer shift at a “difficult” polling station. Patrick, the Irish man who told a Jewish woman that he wish Hitler had finished the job, has been convicted of condoning crimes against humanity and of making death threats. Remember all the people here accusing the Jewish victim of using the name Paddy as a slur, well now we know she was telling the truth the whole time. Assuming she was lying in the first place is clear racism against Jews. But unfortunately I highly doubt most of them will be doing any introspection on the matter.

I’ve been saying this for years! Of course in Ireland with our 50% insured population, most of the NHS wannabe civil servants and Slainte-worshipping pols have insurance themselves! The system we should emulate Is Germany.!
Among international experts on healthcare, the UK's system is viewed as being mediocre at best. It is highly centralised, giving patients little or no choice and therefore does not incorporate a competitive/incentivising dynamic. That Ireland's Slaintecare apes the NHS has long been a cause for concern. Sam McBrides's view from Northern Ireland, where the NHS operates
