Captcha has confirmed, by way of my ability to click on a soccer ball and parts of a school bus, not only that I am not a robot, but that I am a human. What an amazing time to be alive.

To clarify, I have known for some time that I was not a robot. Today it was confirmed that I am a human. No biological exam necessary. Artificial intelligence truly is amazing.

Pioneer and absolute titan of special education, my friend Jim Kauffman, died this morning. Jim was faculty emeritus @UVA, and spent his career promoting and defending specialized education. I’m saddened by his passing but grateful for our friendship. Good night, my friend.

“In December 2020, Kevin Plantan’s nightmare began in earnest. On December 15, 2020, when SP was at home performing facilitated communication with one of her aides, she typed out allegations…” Another life shattered by false allegations made with FC: skepticalinquirer.org/exclus…

Excellent piece on the dangers of FC and need for bioethicists to speak up. It’s not an esoteric issue. FC continues to put innocent people in jail and split up families. Gone? No. It’s growing again, hidden behind new names like “Spelling to Communicate.” thehastingscenter.org/bioeth…

Pseudoscience isn't just incorrect—it can also be incredibly dangerous. This story is shocking and disturbing. The new @Netflix documentary "Tell Them You Love Me" unveils the bizarre case of Anna Stubblefield, a disabilities professor who deluded herself into believing in "facilitated communication" (FC), a long-discredited method of communication. In 2015, Stubblefield was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of Derrick Johnson, a 33-year-old severely mentally disabled black man with cerebral palsy who is unable to speak. How did this happen? In 2009, Stubblefield convinced Derrick's parents to let her use FC to potentially unlock Derrick's ability to communicate. This method involves a "facilitator" holding the hand or arm of a non-speaking person to help them type out their thoughts on a keyboard. Using FC, Stubblefield believed that Derrick was not only capable of communication but also quite brilliant. With her assistance, Derrick was supposedly composing poetry and writing essays for university courses. Furthermore, she convinced herself that Derrick loved her and was seducing her. And she loved him too. This culminated in Stubblefield raping Derrick, deluded into believing that he had consented through facilitated communication. Peer-reviewed studies using simple blinding techniques have unequivocally demonstrated that FC is pseudoscience. For instance, when both the non-speaking person and the facilitator were shown the same picture of a common object, such as a shoe, the facilitator would correctly type out "s-h-o-e." However, when shown different images, the typed word invariably matched what the facilitator, not the non-speaking person, had seen. Despite these devastating results, FC has not disappeared. Instead, similar methods have emerged under different names, such as the Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) and Spelling to Communicate (S2C). Practitioners of these new "methods" have learned from FC's history and avoid subjecting their techniques to scientific scrutiny. These pseudoscientific communication methods are still widely used today, convincing emotionally vulnerable family members that their mentally disabled loved ones have functional minds trapped in dysfunctional bodies. As demonstrated by the Stubblefield case, this can lead to severe abuse of the disabled. Today, I am thrilled to have @stuartvyse, the world's leading voice dedicated to exposing facilitated communication pseudoscience, write about FC and its related forms for @RealLastStand. Reminder to media folk on FC. The thing you call “controversial” involves physically manipulating disabled people, usually children, and defrauding the loved ones trying to connect with them—usually by professionals whose credentials say they know better and wouldn’t do that.

Replying to @FCisnotScience
I actually testified about that. Stubblefield claimed to be an FC “master trainer.” Her mother contributed to the “Facilitated Communication Training Standards” and organized FC workshops, including at least one done by several Syracuse insiders. I still have my certificate.

Where are all the Anna Stubblefield sympathizers now? The defended her during trial, argued FC was legit, & rejected scientific evidence. No defending her now? No blog posts, online commentary, social media? Where are the advocates for the spelling to communicate version of FC?

New Netflix documentary "Tell Them You Love Me" Anna Stubblefield uses the long-ago debunked method of facilitated communication (FC) with a severely diabled man with cerebral palsy. Talking to herself through a keyboard (believing he was communicating), she falls in love with him, has sex with him, is convicted of sexual assault, husband divorces her, imprisoned for 2 years, loses custody of her daughter, and still believes FC works. The level of delusion here is beyond belief. It's the same ideomotor response that unconsciously moves the Ouija board, dowsing rods, etc. youtube.com/watch?v=cTy3XMyG…
