The year is 2016, I am flat broke, I don't even have a phone, and because the gods have a sense of humor, I have been invited to Radisson Blu, Upperhill for #BakeAwards because I am a BAKE Kenya member. I am using an old Samsung tablet. You know the ones that lag and the screen feels like it's smeared with oil because it's a 360p resolution of blurriness? But I have a dream to be a writer, and not even holes in my pocket will get in between me and that dream. I look under sofa cushions and sink my hand in each one of my clothes pockets, and I get fare. A matatu drops me at NHIF Upperhill. Good old days before SHA shenanigans (Shananigans). Did I mention that at this point, I had no idea where Radisson Blu was? Not to worry, Google Maps existed in 2016, except I don't think Upperhill maps had arrived on my old tablet because all it was doing was loading... I dial Radisson Blu's customer care number and lift my tablet to my ear so that it looks like I am holding on to a door for dear life. "You do not have enough airtime to complete this call." A lady on the other side tells me with a nice voice, which is just a polite way of saying 'fuck off brokie'. I swallow the kiwaru in my throat. I am on my own. No, God is with us all. I ask a guard after another, and I finally get to the entrance of Radisson and all its opulence. Carpeted floors that look like they have never been stepped on, high ceilings rising to the heavens, chandeliers floating mid-air as if they never heard of gravity, and the triumph of finally making it to the venue. The year is 2025. I am an author of four books, and yes, I have a proper phone, and I have been invited to the awards yet again, not just as a member but this time as a nominee for Creative Writer of the Year. The gods still have a sense of humor. I will share in their happiness, and I think it would be poetic if this time round I was among the winners on the podium. Make it happen by visiting vote.bakeawards.co.ke/ and voting Kisauti under creative writing. #BAKEAwards2025

Increasing tobacco taxes is the most cost-effective method of reducing tobacco consumption in Africa. Higher taxes raise the retail price of tobacco products and make them less affordable. #TaxJustice #TobaccoTaxConference2025

Crystal Asige has formally declared her intention to contest for the position of Nairobi County Woman Representative in 2027. Born in Mombasa with full sight, Asige lost her vision at the age of 25 due to glaucoma. She is a professionally trained BBC journalist and a graduate of the University of the West of England, Bristol. Through her YouTube channel and social media platforms, Asige works to demystify disability, challenge societal stereotypes, and share her lived experiences. In her tenure as senator, she has sponsored several progressive bills, earning a reputation as one of the most impactful and principled legislators in the country. Despite her partial vision, Asige has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and foresight,,, qualities that in the realm of public service, far surpass those of her political counterparts. She has better vision than Esther Passaris and Karen Nyamu rolled into one mediocre package. She's humbly requesting y'all to consider her in the race for Nairobi women rep. Her candidacy is a call for Nairobians to embrace substance over spectacle. She has my unequivocal vote.

I’ve been sent posters like the one by @KISE2023KENYA helping to break down the Persons With Disabilities Act, 2025 and honestly, I love to see it. When information is made clear, accessible, and easy to engage with, more people understand their rights. Shout out to everyone breaking down the Act and putting it in the hands of the people it’s meant to protect. Inclusion in Kenya is no longer an option. #VIP

It is common to think about what you would like to accomplish. It is less common to think about what must be discarded to make space for your new endeavors. The time must come from somewhere. What do you need to give up to make space for what you would like to achieve? James clear

A rare moment of being asked to have a word with Her Excellency, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf - former President of Liberia and first democratically elected female President in Africa! Her presence? Wow, I’m speechless. Let me just catch my breath 😮‍💨 #VIP

Inclusive education matters for persons with disabilities. The Persons With Disabilities Act 2025 is a promise that no one’s education will be overlooked. Here’s a quick look at some of what the Act says about inclusive education: Requires inclusive education by promoting integration of learners with disabilities in schools, guaranteeing free and compulsory basic education, and ensuring affirmative action in enrolment at all levels. Mandates allocation of resources for disability training, including teacher training for inclusive education. Obligates counties to ensure free and compulsory pre-primary education for children with disabilities. Guarantees equality and non-discrimination in all education-related opportunities and benefits. Protects rights of children with disabilities, including access to inclusive education, family life, expression, and protection from harm, with the best interest of the child as paramount. Inclusion in Kenya is no longer an option! #VIP

To claim to care about the life of some, and encourage it’s violation for others. Whether it’s a child failed by a hospital or someone beaten and detained without reason, we must take all injustice personally. It mustn’t be performative, or convenient, but constant. #VIP
