The question I hear all of the time when I talk about choice/independent reading: How do you know if the students are really reading?
The question I ask in return: How do you know if the students are really reading the whole class novel?

When kids struggle with reading or math, we provide more support and practice. When they struggle with behavior, we often do the opposite. Imagine giving a detention for poor ELA performance. Does anyone think that would help? Me either. #thatonekid

Independent reading is not about a level; it’s not about a certain number of minutes. Independent reading is that reading we do that helps us develop independent thoughts - not thoughts directed by anyone else.

It’s simple. Let kids read. (Period) Give kids choice. Never ban a book or deter a child from reading anything. (And btw—-please focus on book love, lives and NOT levels!)

Once more for the folks in the back row, if you claim you are giving kids reading choices, but you restrict and define every book they are "allowed" to read, you are not giving them choice at all.

Don't give kids a list of characteristics of a genre. Instead, give many examples of the genre, ask them to discover the characteristics.
It builds buy-in.
They'll learn to notice as they read and to incorporate traits in their writing on purpose. #literacyBU @LindaMRief
