Who needs a Station F when you could have Founders Estate or Tech Mansion in the surging international brand that is the Costwolds

Jonny is great and would do a great job at DBT. But changes to DSIT (which I’ve been getting calls about) would be a mistake. A mega department would mean British tech competing with British steel for attention. And waste 6 months reorg-ing when time is of the essence. Not good.

One of the most exciting infrastructure projects in Britain right now. If we could build tunnels like the Norwegians we could build new motorways and railways so cheaply that they could be self-funding. The biggest prize is Manchester to Sheffield. thetimes.com/uk/transport/ar…

Have written today on a fascinating - and v v important - economic puzzle. Either:
1) AI is driving a boom in entrepreneurship everywhere but Britain
or
2) AI is driving a boom in British entrepreneurship, but our economic data is too broken to notice.
Which is it?

📣 Today with @Founders_Forum we've published an open letter to Andy Burnham: Rebuild Britain.
It's signed by 100+ founders & investors who are clear that the next few years will make or break Britain as a tech power. We must:
Back founders on tax, investment and more
Unlock scaleup capital
Bulldoze "computer says no" regulation
Deliver procurement £ for British tech
Ensure tech talent in Government
We're ready to rebuild Britain. And want to work with anyone who wants to do it with us. 🇬🇧

I agree with Burnham in The Times, that investing in defence capabilities is a both essential for security and driver of regional prosperity.
That is why I launched Great British Founders, to explore how individuals had done this before, and learn how we could do it again...
The first blog on Mark Firth is the perfect example of this approach. He is the man who built a steel empire in Sheffield and provided world-leading gun capabilities to the British navy. Read the full blog: greatbritishfounders.substac…

some shaky sovereignty thinking going round
we 100% need to back great UK companies to become global winners, but just as being *cut off* from best models weakens us, so too does *cutting off* best suppliers
the US is sovereign because *they win*, not because they retreat
given there's a debate in Parliament today on defining 'sovereignty', a brief response to @samfr's piece last week, Sovereignty for Sale:
i write as someone who cares a lot about sovereignty, but particularly sovereignty that comes from winning, not just sovereignty from preventing competition
to that end I think @samfr's piece was interesting, but made the wrong conclusion
imo sovereignty in procurement is about a trilemma between speed, capability & domestic resilience
so if partnering with a US company gives UK soldiers an advantage, quickly, that is good for sovereignty!
there *are* Qs about whether the short-term benefit is worth it in the long-run: do you erode your own procurement leverage? do you snuff out fledging domestic competitors?
I do think we need much more domestic 'production-smoothing' over decades, rather than allowing globalisation & outsourcing to erode industry entirely & increase costs of rebuilding eventually
but if US suppliers provide superior capability, the answer isn't to block them from tenders

I've written about Anthropic, the kill switch, and what it means for Britain.
Successive Governments have taken AI seriously in the context of 'normal times'. But these are not normal times. We need to respond now to ensure Britain isn't left behind.

We should improve the conditions every company faces rather than picking champions; anchor activity with hard-to-move assets and support with strings attached; and court foreign firms' activity as keenly as we keep our own.

The infrastructure we need can be the infrastructure we like, worthy of the communities they serve.
Let’s build with taste! 🇬🇧

This is a worrying decision from the ICO which raises some big questions about where power sits in our democracy.
Ministers & civil servants should be allowed – indeed, encouraged! – to use AI tools to test ideas and ask questions without fear of being FOI-ed.
Instead, this will have a chilling effect, and stop public servants from using the best technology out there.
Yet again, ALBs that were designed to protect democracy are instead preventing the state from delivering for ordinary people.
Capital is becoming heavy again. Energy, advanced manufacturing, robotics, biotech - the next wave of technology will re-bind capital to place in a way software never did. That makes the Victorian founders more relevant than they've been in decades.
