We live in a perilous time when you can learn so much that is true in the right places and so much that is lies in the wrong places. Media literacy is key, and we need the humanities for that.

ALT And these are issues that hit everything we do, all the time, constantly, unrelentingly. Technology is our lives now. We wake up, we use our phone, we check our texts (three spam calls, two spam texts), we look at our bank balance (two-factor authentication check), we read the news (a quarter of the page is blocked by an advertisement asking for our email that's deliberately built to hide the button to get rid of it, or a login screen because we got logged in again), we check social media (after being shown an ad every two clicks), and then we log onto Slack (and feel a pang of anxiety as 15 different notifications appear).

This essay on AI is almost cathartic in the way that it captures and confirms so eloquently how so many of us feel. I think Mr. Chiang has gifted us with something that will be referenced and talked about for a long time. Send it to everyone you know.
In a new Weekend Essay, Ted Chiang argues that artificial intelligence can’t make real art. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/-U…

Finally Rishi Sunak keeps saying he is fed up of people talking down Britain. Well I am fed up of people talking down universities- which are one of the things the UK can be genuinely proud of.

If you’re a new professional or attending LILAC for the first time, head over to the First Timers and New Professionals Breakfast! It’s taking place each morning of #LILAC24 before sessions begin, on Floor 1 of the Rose Bowl. (We can confirm the pastry rumours are true!)
Hope to see some fellow new professionals/first-timers at the @LILAC_conf breakfast meet-ups next week! (there are rumours of pastries 🥐)

A key requirement for being a science fiction writer without losing your mind is the ability to distinguish between science fiction (futuristic thought experiments) and *predictions*. SF writers who lack this trait come to fancy themselves fortune-tellers who SEE! THE! FUTURE!

Privatisation and austerity don't cut costs. They merely transfer them from corporations and the state to individuals. Sometimes with devastating consequences.
My column for this week - and this one is personal.
