For anyone curious what we do, here is the situational awareness software. dots are UAS going in the eyewall at 250 m altitude. In this case, I'm trying to get high winds to help the NHC forecaster while also avoiding the nastiest stuff on radar that can sink the drone. #Isaías
A couple of the images from #hurricane #Polo on yesterday's mission from N42. We deployed 4 @BlackSwiftTech S0 UAS into various parts of the storm. NHC quoted the data we used in their forecast discussion which is pretty cool. Almost a 9.5 hr mission. It was busy
People should definitely check out this video made by @iCyclone from the ground during Hurricane Melissa.

Fifth and final pass through Hurricane Melissa for our crew today. Just after noon entering from the NW corner exiting SE.
Since @MaxVelocityWX showed my other video of Hurricane Melissa's eye, here are some more. :) The first one is the ocean surface near the eyewall interface
Getting ready for another @BlackSwiftTech UAS mission into Hurricane Melissa. Will we see Cat5 today?

New paper released led by my former student! Using small UAS to calculate exchange coefficients at the air-sea interface in low winds. This is the result of years of development and validation by many involved in the project: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

JTECH article: Development and Validation of the Skyfora StreamSonde – A Lightweight High Frequency Instrument to Measure Atmospheric Soundings
DOI: doi.org/10.1175/JTECH-D-24-0…
In this paper we demonstrate the capabilities of the @skyfora_weather Streamsonde, a novel atmospheric profiler that has a lot of potential including getting high-frequency swarm measurements.
Proud of all these students!
Three Embry‑Riddle students are headed to internships at NOAA weather research centers after being selected for the U.S. agency’s prestigious internship program. 🦅

A flight into Hurricane Hugo (1989) takes the prize for “bumpiest ever" for NOAA’s WP-3D Hurricane Hunter aircraft missions, according to @JoshWadler et al, who developed a novel “bumpiness index” to quantify 3-D turbulence.
