The EuroLeague is a closed league with one door for merit: the EuroCup winner.
This year Bourg walked up to that door, as EuroCup champions on an €8.2M budget, and had to turn back. A 3,540-seat arena and the cost of the competition made it impossible.
France 2026-27: the 2 EuroLeague clubs average €27.8M. The other 14 average €6.3M.
When the only way in for results can't be used, the league isn't rewarding basketball. It's rewarding owners.
The owners' model doesn't protect anyone. Monaco ran on ~€40M last season and collapsed out of both the EuroLeague and the French league. Clubs that lose money every year still vote on how the league works, and they vote for their own survival, not for the competition.
Open access with relegation, revenue for promoted clubs and time to meet standards would turn that door into a pathway.

🚨 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: Ireland have registered a DEFENDER (Jimmy Dunne) as their goalkeeper for tonight’s match against Israel.
Ireland's goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has REFUSED to participate in the match, saying his decision is based on his belief that “the killing of innocent people is wrong” and that his stance is against “the atrocities in the region”, not the Israeli people or Jewish community.
QPR defender Jimmy Dunne has therefore officially been listed as Ireland’s THIRD goalkeeper for tonight.
