He didn't say this at all? The interviewer made a joke and pulled a number out of thin air, and Damon laughed.
A cursory Google search would tell you break-even was $750m at most. Which is a lot of money, but it printed cash for Universal, and it's going to continue doing so.
Matt Damon just said The Odyssey made almost three times what The Martian did, and that they needed to cross $1,500,000,000 just to sleep at night.
The standard for a “hit” in Hollywood is officially insane now
Matt Damon: “The Martian, which I think is the biggest movie that I’ve ever kind of headlined…”
“I think The Odyssey is almost made like three times what that made.”
“That was a real hit for me. But there’s this other league of these kind of movies that just… I’ve just never…”
“We need to cross $1.5 billion to just sleep at night, right? It’s like, what?”
“It was great to have it be that successful, but also great given the…”

I feel like it used to be really common- especially in creative fields, but even in politics- where people in their late 20s or early 30s got handed some real responsibility. And for like the first quarter of the 21st century, that stopped, no matter how capable you were.
When I read my first Tom Clancy novel I thought what most dated it, tied it to the ’90s, was its confidence—the belief in experts, the trust in institutions, the faith in technology. I wrote a whole essay about it, I found it so striking.
These days, I think what most dates Clancy is how many of his characters are empowered with real responsibility in their early thirties.

Iowa’s governor-elect Rob Sand has a surprising résumé: before entering politics, he worked as a high-fashion model, walking runways in Milan and Paris for brands including Prada, Number (N)ine, and Giuliano Fujiwara.
The 44-year-old Democrat modeled in the early 2000s to help pay for college, even appearing in Prada’s Spring 2003 menswear show.

The congressional district Haley Stevens represents in suburban Detroit is the wealthiest in Michigan.
Replying to @TraceyRyniec
Suburban Detroit especially. There's some serious money in Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, etc.
More than a little shocked Sony didn't release/hype these to the audiophile community first, so that tells me who their target market is.

Every image shot with a digital camera is processed in some way! You're turning light into 1s and 0s. Good gravy.
This is altering the image that was recorded.
I saw a tweet from @VanityFair essentially implying Olivia was fabricating news.
Not being dumb, I looked into it. And of course it’s just ChatGPT over processing an image.
If you find this disturbing or unethical, know every phone pic you take is computational photography and stitched from multiple images to approximate.
In j-school, we had media law and ethics classes that dealt with stuff like this. And it was pre-AI, the dawn of when PS got really powerful for editing and clean-up.
Spoiler: It didn't fly then, either.
Hello my name is Olivia Reingold and I used ChatGPT to brighten and sharpen an image of a woman in Valentino shoes and a Chanel bag.
After processing, it still shows these same things: a woman wearing Valentino shoes and a Chanel bag.
She is a real (and chic!) woman, really wearing those items. The observation holds.
Here’s the photo I took:
