I personally know Catholics getting this done even as their wife wants "just one more". I get it. You're free to not worry now. You won't have to deal with a surprise pregnancy when you or your wife is 43. You can make your plans to have kids out of the house by 54. You can rest easy, knowing your money is not going to be spent among any more offspring. Your health can continue to slide. Your faith can remain largely untested. You can make sure life doesn't get too hard. No sleepless nights in your 40s. Heck yeah. But, what if that little kid you may have made was like your little fishing or baking buddy, or your elder kid's babysitter once they started having kids. What if they came out and looked just like you or your spouse? What if they had something really unique and special to offer? (They do.) what if you were to have them and then wonder how on earth you could have ever lived without them? I won't say the alternative is easy. But a whole person that is your child is such a big deal, such a big gift, you cannot close the door like this on them. What if they are meant to be? What if any ensuing struggle is also meant to be for you? It takes a lot of courage to stay even a little open to life as one continues to age. But don't you like yourself better when you have courage? And isn't your life better when you let a few surprises be allowed to unfold? Doesn't it hurt to be so sure about this?
