I have to get this rant off of my chest, The Weather Channel is complete garbage. They put out graphics like this 5 days away knowing well that it won’t happen, all for clicks, no accuracy. A dying media organization that cares more about politics than the actual weather, half the time during tornado season they don’t even have live coverage, they’d rather play a random episode of Weather gone viral for the 1000th time. There’s a reason that people like me who used to watch them 24/7 as a child have not turned them on in years. They ride the coattails of legends like Cantore, who helped make that entire brand. TWC has facilitated their own downfall for years, it’s sad to see because they used to be so great

🍂 Fall preview! A strong cold front will bring an unseasonably cool air mass to much of the Lower 48 through the weekend & into next week. Forecast high temperatures are expected to be roughly 10 to 30 degrees below average for this time of year.

August 16: 11:20AM AST @53rdWRS find #Erin is now a Category 5 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Visit hurricanes.gov for the latest

As #ERIN’s track gets narrowed down, I turn towards the intensity forecast. NHC is calling for a 110 kt (125 mph) C3 at the end of the forecast.
Based on the atmospheric profile ahead of ERIN, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 115-120 kt (130-140 mph) Category 4. It’ll be interesting to see how the models do, which suggest a strong C3/C4.

GOOD NEWS! There’s a 98% chance that Erin misses the Lower 48!
Bermuda and the Canadian Maritimes should pay close attention, however.

This needs to be investigated.
. @NOAA creates fake red temperature maps by fabricating data. They created record heat in Central Africa in places where it was cool or they had no data. They also erased the cold in South America, Australia, India and Siberia.

This reminds me of September 11th, 2001.
(Not a forecast, just a thought.)
There was a hurricane offshore that day...

Tropical update: yes, we have a tropical wave working off the coast of Africa. It's *at least* 7-10 days away from reaching U.S., meaning it's beyond range of "deterministic," or specific, predictions.
There are two main sources of uncertainty regarding where it matures and "recurves" northwards – either toward land or out to sea.
1.) Where the center forms. This should happen in the next 3-4 days as it treks westward across the central tropical Atlantic in the MDR, or "Main Development Region." Projecting where a storm might go is futile until the storm's center actually becomes established. Otherwise, it's like playing pin-the-tail on a donkey without knowing where the donkey is.
2.) How strong is the Bermuda high? The Bermuda high is a high pressure zone. Think it it as a "forcefield" acting as a guardrail. If it's stronger, we have a stronger forcefield, and we suppress the storm south and force it westward toward the Lesser Antilles. If the forcefield is weaker, then there's a greater chance our nascent system will slip northwards out to sea.
It's worth noting that, in about a week's time, the overarching environment *may* become conducive to strengthening, perhaps swiftly, somewhere north of Hispaniola toward the Bahamas. The 7-10 day time frame may bear watching for the Bahamas and the Southeastern U.S., but uncertainty abounds.
For now, know that we're still 7-10 days away from *anything* impacting *anywhere*. Bad actors on social media will always post cherrypicked scary-looking model runs. The science, however, tells us that we have very little skill beyond 5-7 days – especially before a system even forms.

There it is.
Decent chance this goes on to become the first hurricane of the season. Have no idea of its long term future but we will track it and see what happens. Next name up is Erin.

Chances for Atlantic tropical cyclone formation normally rise in August, and this year is no different! Formation chances are currently forecast to increase for the Central Atlantic through mid-August. Get the latest on any tropical development at hurricanes.gov.

ALT The Climate Prediction Center Global Tropics Hazards Outlook valid for the period of Aug 13, 2025 - Aug 19, 2025 (week 2). Tropical cyclone formation probability (indicating the potential for formation of a tropical depression of greater) is elevated, reaching 40 to 60 percent east of the Antilles to approximately the central Atlantic. A broader 20 to 40 percent chance of formation is forecast over the western parts of the Main Development Region.
