Being 32 years old and having the most advanced form of diabetic retinopathy-in both eyes- is scarier than most people realize. The treatment I have done is by a highly specialized ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon-but it's still not a cure. What I have done is to help slow down or stop the progression of diabetic retinopathy. One day, I hope we are able to find a cure for type one diabetes, and I hope I'm around for that day.
(please don't tell me how 'easy' it is to manage, or that if I 'just control my blood sugars' I'll be fine). Managing type 1 diabetes is like trying to manually fly a plane when the automatic pilot (my pancreas) completely breaks. You have to make roughly 180 extra decisions every single day that non-diabetics never think about. Every single carb, stressful moment, walk down the stairs, or hour of sleep requires calculated math. It is a relentless mental burden that causes "diabetes burnout."
You can eat the exact same meal two days in a row, take the exact same insulin dose, and get wildly different results because of variables you cannot control. Stress, anxiety, hormones, physical pain, poor sleep, the fucking WEATHER-how hot or cold it is changes how fast your body absorbs insulin.
Non-diabetics don't understand what a blood sugar roller coaster feels like physically. A severe low leaves you shaking, sweating, confused, and fighting adrenaline spikes. A severe high causes nausea, exhaustion, blinding headaches, and "brain fog." You can't just "snap out of it" or "fix it with a snack" without a massive physical and emotional toll.
We are managing an incredibly complex, demanding disease, alongside advanced eye care, neurological symptoms, and mental health challenges. The complications both immediate and long term completely damages the blood vessels throughout your body, and also impact major organs. We are doing an immense amount of invisible hard work every day, So yes, it is reasonable to be tired of people oversimplifying my reality.

30 years ago today, on October 18, 1996, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
30 years of needles, IVs, ICUs, and fighting like hell to make insulin affordable for all.
Here’s to at least 30 more trips around the sun!
In today’s episode of exploiting diabetics for profit:
Dexcom holds our life-sustaining CGMs and years of our health data hostage to force us to waive our constitutional right to a jury trial and agree to mandatory arbitration and a class action waiver in their favor.

Reminder that the guy who invented insulin sold it for one dollar because he wanted everyone to have access to it.
Now it's too expensive for people to get ahold of. I fucking hate this planet.
Indeed. And they murder in public sight with zero repercussions and for no reason other than greed.
40 million people will DIE by 2030 because basic ass insulin has been price gouged by @EliLillyandCo, @novonordisk, and @sanofi.
If y’all need me today, I’ll be at the @USWNT vs Spain game!!
Go USA!!!! 🇺🇸⚽️
Newsflash: “mental illness” is not the reason I believe Americans shouldn’t die from the pure unnecessary greed that is US insulin prices.
No one should die bc insulin is hundreds per month, only in the US.
The reason? Fucking human morality.

Turns out - getting your insulin pump tubing caught on your suitcase’s wheels in your hotel room when you get up at 10:45 pm to go to the bathroom and ripping out the insertion is not fun. Who could have guessed?
