There are basically two ways of running any country or political system: One is socialist communism—all power to the state. The state does the planning and the people have to conform to the plan. The people are the pawns of the state. They have no human rights other than those granted to them by the state. To me, with my religious background, that was totally and utterly wrong. It denied the human spirit. The system which I believe in finds its most eloquent expression in the American Declaration of Independence: The state is there to serve the liberties of the people, their own spirit, and to develop their own talents and abilities. And so that the strong does not intimidate the weak, freedom is made to work by a rule of law. It is your duty to use your talents and abilities. It is your duty to accept responsibility because you accept freedom. You need private property for that; the property does not belong to the state. You have your own land, your own shares, you have savings, you have thrift. Out of that, it is your bounden duty to give to those less fortunate than yourselves.

Barry … are your sceptical questions reasons for not taking action?

For years businesses around Castle Green in @visit_taunton have been calling for a Public Safety Protection Order here. @GideonJAmos MP, police, both local councils, ALL agree. Yet the Head of Community Safety at @SomersetCouncil still prevaricates. @BillRevans @SomConfidential

It is hard to believe that Vivaldi died penniless, even after composing masterpieces like this.

Seriously, @montie … are you not harbouring a few doubts about your switch to @reformparty_uk now that you can see what @KemiBadenoch is achieving with the @Conservatives ?

The book was published in 1989 by Pyramid Books. I send my deepest condolences to Ian’s wife and family. RIP my good friend.
* @Caterertweets Ian McAndrew was a great chef and one of the leading pioneers in the renaissance of British gastronomy in the 1980s. He featured in Volume 1 of my two-book series Great British Chefs.

This was fabulous. A life-affirming piece of music - vigorous and joyful. I’d give it a high Haydn-approval rating.

One of the most energetic ensemble scenes from the ballet Zorba the Greek features male dancers in traditional costumes performing the sirtaki with synchronized, precise, and spirited movements on stage. Inspired by the 1964 film Zorba the Greek, based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis and featuring music by Mikis Theodorakis, the dance has become an artistic expression closely associated with the joyful, free-spirited, and life-affirming character of Greek culture.

Sensible chap. But then @UKLabour @andyburnham @10DowningStreet don’t do common sense.
Simon Jordan speaks for millions of people who are concerned about the number of illegal migrants. It does not make him or those concerned about illegal migration a racist. Far from it. It’s time for this issue to be properly discussed and addressed.

We hear cries of despair from @BrewhouseLive @visit_taunton - threatened again with closure. 50 years ago, the theatre opened thanks to the vision and drive of councillors like John Meikle. Where is that leadership today? @SomersetCouncil @CountyGazetteEd @DanielMumby ?

The country sees it. We cry out in despair. But our cloth-eared rulers don’t.
Britain is facing its greatest threat since World War II. The decline and decay is happening everywhere. The greatest threat since 1945 is not tanks or bombs. It is the quiet, accelerating decay of a country that has forgotten how to build, how to grow, how to maintain, how to be secure and how to tell the truth about itself. Streets dirtier. Services slower. Ambition punished. Borders treated as optional. Energy policy that treats abundance as a sin. A political class that cycles through leaders with no vision while the foundations keep crumbling. A nation that once stood alone now struggles to stand at all. That is the real emergency. And it’s not just Britain. The decline is happening right across the West.

It’s worth reading this brilliant article by @matthewsyed in the Sunday Times on how so many “hyperliberal” political leaders are the “true extremists of our age” and “defined by the tenets of wokeism” via net zero zealotry, trans ideology and open border illegal migration. “I believe history will judge the likes of Cameron, Johnson, Trudeau, Hollande, Macron and von der Leyen as the most disastrous in postwar history.” He says this as an old school liberal. He’s absolutely correct.

Here was a great leader of our country. Today we are governed by muppets.
"I can’t bear Britain in decline. I just can’t."
