Campaigning like a white nationalist when you’re an Indian American is an interesting choice
Ramaswamy: Look at what's happening in Dearborn, Michigan. We're not going to let that come to our state of Ohio.

Do you think Ken Paxton is running a good campaign in Texas? You know Texas well. Rep. Chip Roy: "I do know Texas well..." But I asked you if you thought Ken Paxton was running a good campaign. You didn't say yes. Roy: "Well, they're all over the state. They're working hard..."

A story of the Minnesota tater tot hotdish. Tater tot hotdish is not just a casserole in Minnesota. Do not call it just a casserole. A regular casserole is something people in other states make when they have a recipe and a plan. Tater tot hotdish is what Minnesota makes because there is a funeral, a church potluck, a hockey tournament, a blizzard, or a Tuesday. The formula has three parts and every Minnesota family that grew up eating it knows them without being told. A starch on top, which is tater tots, arranged in rows by somebody with strong feelings about it. A binder, which is a can of cream of mushroom soup, occasionally cream of chicken, and if somebody uses both there will be discussion. And a protein, which is ground beef browned with onion, plus green beans or corn, and which vegetable you use tells everyone exactly how your grandmother made it. That is it. A handful of ingredients, most of them from cans or the freezer, all of them available at the Cub Foods in Minneapolis, the Hy-Vee in Rochester, or the Walmart outside a small Minnesota town at ten at night. The tot placement is where personality shows. Some people dump the bag. Some people line them up in tight, perfectly straight rows like they are shingling a roof. That second group is not doing it for aesthetics. They are doing it because their grandmother did it and they can still hear her telling them not to leave any gaps. The pan is 9x13. It has always been 9x13. It goes in the oven at 350 and comes out when the tots are golden brown, and anybody who pulls it early and serves pale, soggy tots has failed the household. It travels. That is the actual genius of it. Foil over the top, dish towel underneath, straight into the back seat of a Chevy Silverado or an old Ford, and it arrives at the church basement still hot. In small-town Minnesota, that matters. When somebody passes away, food starts showing up before anyone has figured out what to say. When a neighbor has surgery, somebody brings dinner. When the high school hockey team has a fundraiser, folding tables appear and half the town shows up carrying something baked in a rectangular glass dish. Nobody asks who organized it. Nobody needs instructions. Somebody just says, "I'll bring a hotdish," and everybody understands. And every Minnesota family has that one relative who insists theirs is better because they add extra cheese, use a different soup, or put the tots in a pattern that looks like somebody measured it with a ruler. There will be arguments about whether the green beans belong in it. There will be somebody who says their mother never used cream of mushroom. And there will always be one person scraping the crispy corners out of the pan before anyone else gets a chance. Thats me! Every other state has comfort food. Minnesota has a delivery system for grief, celebration, hockey season, and winter, and it comes in a rectangle.

I had a meeting with the dean of the college yesterday and about 3 minutes into our discussion about my dissertation proposal, he stopped me to bring in the head of the department. As it turns out, my body of research may have contributed something substantial to historians' overall understanding of Colonial America. I am, in his words, "1% of 1%". My Vibrio vulnificus paper, while it focuses on Jamestown, is a potentially new methodology that will help solve the question of why so many Colonial America coastal towns had seasonal high mortality rates. Places like Charleston, SC and Boston, MA may be able to have a plausible answer to why everyone kept dying in late summer/early autumn.

Halloween at The Midget Club, 1968 (6356 S. Kedzie Ave) Owner Parnell St. Aubin was a Munchkin soldier in The Wizard of Oz. The bar operated on the South Side from 1948 to 1982 and had a low bar and bar stools to accommodate the proprietors.

Michael Pollan reveals how the introduction of caffeine completely changed human history and consciousness. "Before caffeine, it was a very different world and a very different consciousness. People were drunk a lot of the time, buzzed almost all of the time because it was safer than water" "Water was really how you got diseases. If you fermented things, even low alcohol, it killed a lot of the microbes. So people, even kids, drank hard cider for breakfast" "Tea, chocolate, and coffee all arrive in the same decade in England, and things start to change... no one ate or drank boiling water or hot beverages before" "Boiling it made it much safer. This gave this incredible public health boost to these places, and then you have the drug that fosters a kind of more linear, rational, focused way of thinking" "People in the 1600s started writing about it saying, 'Wow, we have this new civil and sober drink that we can use.' And that, I think, makes possible things like the Industrial Revolution"

The clip repeats the myth that pre-caffeine people were mostly drunk because water was unsafe. Historians and medieval sources show water was commonly drunk from wells/springs while weak ale provided nutrition/calories, not a substitute for bad water. leslefts.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-gr… slate.com/human-interest… fakehistoryhunter.net/2026/02/02/dri…

Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

Breaking: the FAA has shut down airspace over the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, with a notice calling it a “US Government Nuclear Incident.”
An event is in progress that has triggered emergency response activities at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site. This message is being sent to you as part of our emergency response organization information process.
