Detective Susan Logothetti lives her professional life investigating cold cases at the Everett Police Department, north of Seattle.
New advancements in DNA technology began to uncover new leads in some of the coldest cases on her desk. For one of these cases, Logothetti said, she needed a fresh DNA sample to lock her suspect up for good. So, she and her team devised a plan that centered on a stick of chewing gum and a door-to-door taste test. (1/2)

In 2023, Everett Police sent evidence from Judy Weaverβs 1984 murder scene for retesting. When Detective Susan Logothetti got those results, they showed a hit in CODIS β the FBI's national DNA database. But to confirm his guilt, she knew she needed a fresh DNA sample from the suspect.
To obtain that DNA, Logothetti and her team came up with a ruse: they would approach the man with an opportunity to taste a new brand of gum they were making for Safeway. "It was like he was at a wine tasting," Logothetti told Peter Van Sant. #48Hours
At just 13 years old, Trysten Mullis found his mother, Amy Mullis, on the ground with a corn rake sticking out of her back on their family's hog farm. What the father and son described as an accident, looked more like a murder to local authorities.
Now 21 years old, as his father serves a life sentence for the murder, Trysten speaks out for the first time and continues to maintain that his father is innocent. #48Hours
The day before Thanksgiving, 1979, Jackie Brown, a young state patrol officer in Washington state, had just finished mowing her lawn when an attacker told her to get on her knees and not turn around. Jackie was able to fight back and escape her attacker, who was later convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.
But as a first-time offender, he was sentenced to one year of work release and five years of probation. "He got to carry on with his life, and it changed mine forever," Jackie told Peter Van Sant. In the following years, Jackieβs attacker went on to commit more violent crimes against women. #48Hours
Advancements in DNA technology have helped identify suspects in decades-old unsolved crimes. As a cold case investigator, Detective Susan Logothetti says, βI love how people who thought they could get away with it 40 years ago are looking over their shoulders now, wondering what they left behind.β #48Hours
Amy Mullis was found with a corn rake in her back, lying on the floor of a shed on the familyβs hog farm. Prosecutors said Amy was struck by her husband, Todd, who was convicted of murder. But their son Trysten, who was working in the barn with his father the day Amy died, says the only time he was away from his dad was when he went to get a quick drink of water. Thatβs not enough time, he says, for his father to run from the barn to the shed, kill Amy, and run back again.
Now, brother-sister attorneys Daniel and Dina Nesheiwat are working to overturn the conviction. Daniel ran the route Todd would have had to take β itβs the length of nearly four football fields. #48Hours
