the idea of durian as vote buying
N Sembilan, Johor polls: Free durians, lucky draws prompt Bersih reform call dlvr.it/TV4fYC
The idea that area studies and statistics are substitutes and not complements is so tiresome. You know what requires language skills? Running a field experiment with a team. Or collaborating with a government agency to get data. How do you think these projects happen?
Replying to @nick_kapur
This is the end result of decades of ideological warfare against all area knowledge in political science, driving almost all of the comparitivists and regional experts out of the field and replacing them with bullshit math-iness.

Congratulations to Alex and the whole team at MSL. As a sucker for all things speedy (patrickcollison.com/fast), I thought this was an impressive chart:
Check out my new piece out this week in @JoDemocracy. I discuss the idea of "political voyeurism" in Indonesia and its implications for polarization.
In the digital age, when news spreads far and fast, Nicholas Kuipers explains, how the politics and policies of one locale may inflame citizens’ attitudes thousands of miles away, magnifying political differences and division.

This builds on work with @tylersimko in which we introduce the concept by drawing on data in the US context (link below).

I've plotted the most expensive McDonald's burger and the least expensive MacBook over time. This analysis projects that the most expensive burger will be more expensive than the cheapest laptop as soon as 2081

This new @CUP_PoliSci book by @KuipersNicholas offers a fresh look at the relationship between state- and nation-building, a focus of discussion since the works by Stein Rokkan in the 1970s. It is a great read!
