It's terrible that teachers face violence. The trouble with the article is that it posits strict discipline as a cure for bad behaviour -sometimes it’s the cause. Boundaries are important, but reverting to simplistic responses is just depressing & wrong. bbc.co.uk/news/education-686…

"Nowhere says school has to be fun". Wow. As a contribution to a discussion about how some schools seem to suck all the joy out of learning, this comment takes the prize for missing the point while simultaneously revealing there's a problem.
Replying to @BarbaraBleiman
Is it possible that the reason is at home they are the decision makers and rule the roost but when they get to school they have to follow instruction? A lot of kids struggle with this. Makes school unfun for everyone. Thing is that nowhere says school is supposed to be fun.

Anyone else feel a little bit sad at this? The science behind stopping giggling... amongst all the tweets about joyless schools.

"Something in the social contract between schools and home has changed ...": my conversation about bullying and exclusions with @ShelaghFogarty @LBC this afternoon on behalf of @ASCL_UK:
'The curriculum doesn't motivate all young people. It doesn't seem relevant to some of them.' @RealGeoffBarton tells @ShelaghFogarty that 'we have come out of Covid with a changed social contract between schools, and young people and parents.'

Article in the @nytimes about the spread of high control behaviour policies in schools in England. Quoting @MrsSDalton75 among others. The journalist says that American schools have moved away from these policies after concerns were raised, but in England it has gone the other way. When I post saying that more and more parents tell me about these highly controlling policies, I’m sometimes told that it’s not really on the increase, that I just have a biased sample. It seems that Tom Bennett disagrees with them. ‘Tom Bennett, a government adviser for school behavior, said that sympathetic education ministers had helped this “momentum.” “There are lots of schools doing this now,” Mr. Bennett said. “And they achieve fantastic results.”’ Fantastic exam results, perhaps. But I’d argue that the other, unmeasured results are more children struggling to attend school and more parents unhappy with what they see. More children in isolation and more concluding that learning isn’t for them. We know that high control environments have psychological side effects. What works to improve exam results can also hurt. nytimes.com/2024/03/09/world…

Breaking headteachers. Breaking teachers. Breaking children. Breaking parents. Institutional harm on repeat. What is it about education? Oh, I know. Behaviourist zealots, ivory towers, hubris, sanctimony, ideology, arrogance.

I was very privileged yesterday to join @naomicfisher @teamsquarepeg and @RethinkingJames to discuss The Attendance Crisis. Spoiler alert: I don’t think it’s an attendance crisis, I think it’s an education omnicrisis and the solutions are within our grasp.
